ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota's extended stretch of hot weather has prompted a warning about toxic blue-green algae.
The algae gathers on the surface of the water and is known to kill dogs if they drink enough of it. It can also cause rashes and respiratory problems for people.
Pam Anderson of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency tells Minnesota Public Radio (http://bit.ly/MxzncN ) that people should be aware of the potential for trouble, and make sure kids and pets stay out of water that looks doubtful.
Anderson says blue-green algae feeds off phosphorous and other nutrients that may run into water. People can protect lakes and ponds by minimizing the runoff of yard or farm soil into waterways.

Now we have toxic algae to add to the zebra muscle / millfoil / swimmers itch and flying carp situation. I see more crazy unenforceable laws in the near future that are too late to help the situation. We better hire another 5,000 people to stand around at the boat landings and twiddle their thumbs. Dang -- its hard to fight Mother Nature. You would almost think she is going to win no matter what -----ya think.
WOW,
cyclerod, look out, the head chastiser from Deerwood is preaching to you now.
If only the blue-green algae would kill the Zebra Mussels and...
Millfoil, then we'd have something. Meanwhile, keep your dogs and kids away.
solution
Me thinks eyolf may be reading more into my post that what is actually there. I re-read it and for the life of me I can't find anything in it about not wanting the newspaper to run a warning. Get a life-----or at least a sense of humor---or maybe a job standing at the landing twiddling your thumbs.
He and snow
like to pretend they are the masters of the universe.
Simple Lib fix, just outlaw Blue Green Algae
The lib answer is to just outlaw things. So why don't we just start posting signs around lakes outlawing blue green algae? The sign would read just like their award winning "gun ban law." "Blue Green Algae is banned from this lake." That should fix everything and we can sleep at night knowing we fixed another big problem.
You could send
the Border Patrol agents that Blahbummer is pulling off the border to issue fines to people that are allowing Blue Green Algae to be in their lakes.
The heat
The heat is also prompting heat strokes, heat exhaustion and heat induced ill temperament.
I'm not mad
at you, Nan.
that's good :)
That's good, all in good fun. I still don't agree with ya though, LOLOLOL
Algae differences?
Is blue-green algae a hybrid of green-green and blue-blue algae? Or was it a failed genetics experiment?
Blue-green algae feeds off phosphorous
I thought phoshorous was a banned chemical in this area? At least I was told not to use it on my lawn. Can anyone confirm this?
Libs to the Rescue, just Outlaw Lake Born Phosphorous Too!
Simple, fixed.
