Ritchie alters title for voter photo ID amendment

Posted: July 9, 2012 - 1:17pm

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie has reworked the title for a constitutional amendment seeking to impose a photo ID requirement for voting.

The state elections chief announced in a news release Monday that the ballot question would carry the following title: "Changes to In-Person & Absentee Voting & Voter Registration; Provisional Ballots."

Sponsors of the measure had set the title previously as "Photo Identification Required for Voting." Dan McGrath of the pro-amendment Minnesota Majority says the group will consider suing over the title swap.

The announcement comes as Ritchie, a Democrat, was sued for substituting a title on the amendment to define marriage in the state constitution as between one man and one woman. Backers of the amendment object to his reworked title and say he is casting their measure in a negative light and overstepping bounds by crafting his own.

They have money to sue?

Go for it.

BTW, did the MN GOP pay their other legal bills yet? And what is the total to date for we the people of MN vs. Brodkorb?

Let's Change Ritchie's Title to "Unemployed"

This is more outrageous behavior by our paid "public servant". Ritchie clearly has a personal agenda contrary to a landslide majority of Minnesotans. We need new leadership, period!

If they didn't have it

for the other amendment they don't here.
"Amendment supporters said the officials lacked authority to rewrite the title that lawmakers approved in 2011."

It looks like the GOP wants

It looks like the GOP wants to keep the title vague.

Most voters won't necessarily know that it affects them if they vote absentee or provisionally until it's too late.

I think it might be better to call this "Lame attempt by corporate facists to divert attention from the wholesale corruption of our elections".

Trying to be sneaky Mr. Ritchie?

This is so obvious by our Mr. Ritchie yes, it is wrong and
underhanded . To me, Mr. Ritchie is creepy and is now playing Chicago politics.
Shouldn't Democrats speak up and say
how dishonest and misleading this is? Where is the
backbone of our Governor to lead for all the people? Where is our MN nice and honest and bi-partisanship?
Isn't Ritchie supposed to be non-partisian?

here's the law

‎2011 Minnesota Statutes 204D.15 Subdivision 1.Titles for constitutional amendments.

The secretary of state shall provide an appropriate title for each question printed on the pink ballot. The title shall be approved by the attorney general, and shall consist of not more than one printed line above the question to which it refers. At the top of the ballot just below the heading, a conspicuous notice shall be printed stating that a voter's failure to vote on a constitutional amendment has the effect of a negative vote.

Way to go, minnesnowda

But you should have let fairandbalanced find it himself. It would have been a good learning experience for him.

Thanks for the statute info. but -----

Shall provide an appropriate title doesn't really mean that
he should change the one that was passed by the legislature.
They know if the title is long and confusing people will not
vote and then is a no vote.
Why not leave it the way it was?
I guess some people like to prove their constitutional right
to be a pinhead.

I am an election judge and will say that of the people that
same day register most usually have photo ID'S . They have the wrong last name or
wrong address on and the people haven't bothered to get
it changed. One lady didn't know her address and couldn't
find anything with her name and address on .
Some people don't care enough to read and understand what
they are voting for and get mad at the election judge if they
don't have any thing with them with their name and address.
What I find amazing is that most people have their photo ID
out when they check-in and can't believe you don't have to
show it. It is so common to have to show your ID for everything.
I think for the few people who don't have photo ID that one
would be good for them to have. I think they would appreciate it and like it.

It was NOT

an appropriate title, it was a feeble attempt to confuse people and criminal in nature. That is something the union thug sponsored DFL is famous for. Being an ex-chairperson snow is well aware of that.

I really have a hard

time finding the part that justifies Ritchie's changes. And if it is hidden in that lawyer-speak it doesn't change the fact that his changes were clearly in violation of any ethics about being impartial in an election and maybe he needs to be impeached. He is a byproduct of the Chicago mob/DFL/Acorn cartel so we shouldn't be supprised.

When someone in elected office...

...does something foul, it's appropriate to cry foul. Apparently, Ritchie also changed the voter ID title to something that was nearly incomprehensible. No wonder Soros was so hot to get "his" people elected SoS. The elections are cheap to buy and they can do all sorts of mischief when they get in. Ritchie definitely has some explaining to do, because either he's a moron when it comes to communication and he can't tell that his "changes" made the amendments less intelligible, or he purposely made them unintelligible for political reasons. Either way, he needs to go.

the GOP rammed these amendments through

and that was okay, but Ritchie and Swanson are bad for adding clarity to what the vote will really mean for the citizens of our state???

Oh, that's rich coming from someone who is from the party...

...that rammed through Obamacare. Your party may "own" Mr. Ritchie, Snowda, but we ALL pay his salary, and we have a right to expect him to execute his duties in a non-discriminatory way (which he has failed to do).

And speaking of Obamacare, weren't you folks saying how it was going to simplify things and save money? 13,000 pages of regulations and empty coffers later...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/07/03/efforts-to-implement-obamacar...

Another example of the Dems' tenuous grasp on reality or perhaps, abject dishonesty, I'll let the readers decide.

Just VOTE NO On Both GOP NEO CON Amendments

Thanks to the large 2010 cast of conservative Tea Party insurgents, the citizens of Minnesota have NOT been well served at either the state or federal level. The gridlock in DC is fairly well understood by most who actually understand the process ,and the actual results or lack of. The Voter ID amendment leaves it up to our state lawmakers to determine at a much later date how this unnecessary infringement on our rights would be defined ,enacted , and enforced. Do you really want the state GOP lawmakers who brought you a month long Gov. shutdown ,elimination of the homeowners property tax credit , plenty of double talk ,and dont forget the GOP state leadership provided by Amy Koch who redefined marriage as relationship between a man ,a women and a Senate aide. The state lawmakers ,based on what they have focused on the last two years surely indicates they cannot be trusted to screw with YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE. . Get out and vote in Nov while you still can. .

Rammed Obamacare through, Meuhl?

That was over a year long process. These amendments written by ALEC are not even original to MN legislators. Just a herd of sheep following the likes of Karl Rove, Grover Norquist and ALEC. Follow the money that supports these amendments..

Go FishheadI! You do have freedom of speech.
