WALKER — Sen. Tom Saxhaug (DFL), Grand Rapids, visited the Cass County Board meeting to introduce himself to some of his new constituents.
Through the redistricting this year, Saxhaug is expected to face off against Sen. John Carlson for the District 5 state senate seat that now covers north and central Cass County. Saxhaug is the DFL endorsed candidate, but will first face a primary election challenge from Laverne H. Pederson.
Saxhaug told the county board that the redistricting shifted one outstate seat from the rural to the metro area. The net effect is that northern Cass County is now in a new District 5, while southern Cass is in a new District 9
While Sen. Carlson previously represented some of Cass County, Sen. Saxhaug is new to Cass residents.
He is a Grand Rapids native who graduated from St. Olaf College and followed his father into the insurance business. He has served three state senate terms. He is married and has two grown children and two grandchildren.
He told the board he sees three bills that past the 2012 legislative session as bi-partisan highlights of that session: the game and fish bill that increased fees, the bonding bill and the Vikings stadium bill.
