The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission welcomed its newest member and began scheduling dates to interview four finalists for its airport manager post.
Don Jacobson of Nisswa, appointed last month by the Crow Wing County Board, was welcomed to the panel. Jacobs formerly worked for what is now Great River Energy. He had been a member of the Andover City Council and has his pilot’s license.
The four finalists who will be invited to the Brainerd area for face-to-face interviews are Leah Henderson of Alaska, Todd Gibbs of Oklahoma, Bill Turner of California and Neil Ralston of Colorado Springs, Colo. All have experience in the aviation industry, Andy Larson, commission chair, said.
The candidates will be interviewed by the six airport commission members and four additional members of a search committee.
The commission set the afternoons of Aug. 1 and Aug. 7 as the times for the interviews.
On a 4-2 vote the commission agreed to pay up to $500 in expenses for the job candidates. Voting yes were Commissioners Rachel Reabe Nystrom, Beth Pfingsten, Don Jacobson and Kevin Goedker. Voting no were Commissioners Andy Larson and Jeff Czeczok.
The commission members authorized the chair and Interim Airport Manager Rick Adair to direct the completion of work to underground fuel tanks which were the source of a citation warning issued recently by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Stan Kalinoski of the MPCA said the citation warning, which carries no monetary fine, directs the airport to fix problems with the fuel tanks within 60 days.
“The tanks have never had adequate leak detection,” Kalinoski said, even though federal law requires it. “This has to be done.”
Kalinoski said warnings had been issued to the airport for this problem in 2005, 2009 and a verbal warning was issued last year.
In other action the commission:
Heard Mike Petersen report that a float promoting the Aug. 12-14 American Barnstormers Tour as well as the Aug. 12 airport open house (both at the airport) will participate in the Brainerd-Baxter Fourth of July Parade. The airport commission authorized use of an airport truck to pull the float.
Scheduled a budget committee meeting for 9 a.m. July 31. Discussion was held to also post it as an airport commission member in case a quorum of members attended the meeting.
The airport commission scheduled a meeting for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at the airport.
