Diabetes lifestyle change program begins July 10

“I CAN prevent Diabetes Lifestyle Change Program” a partnership of the Minnesota Department of Health and Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program for the Lakes Area community, begins July 10.

It’s a 16-week community-based lifestyle change program that offers diabetes prevention education and support for people with pre-diabetes. The program is a commitment of 16 weeks, and will be held at Essentia Health St. Joseph’s - Baxter Clinic, 13060 Isle Drive, Baxter, second floor, large conference room. From 4:30-5:30 p.m. each Tuesday, beginning July 10 through Oct. 23 participants learn how to create a healthier lifestyle and prevent diabetes. Groups will meet with a trained instructor once each week to help participants lose weight, eat healthier and increase physical activity.

“Diabetes is a chronic disease, meaning once diagnosed it will be a part of the individual’s life,” said Danette Holznagel, program coordinator for the Diabetes Resource Program at Essentia Health, in a news release. “Most importantly approximately 98 percent is ‘self management’ or what that individual does to control their blood sugar and prevent complications. Risk for diabetes changes over time and we provide ongoing support to people with diabetes and those who are preventing it.”

The Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program is listed as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Recognized program for Diabetes Prevention. The 16-week program cost is $140, this education is considered preventative education and is not currently covered by medical insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. An individual with pre-diabetes can delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes by making simple lifestyle changes. The Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program works closely with those who are at risk to help these individuals from becoming one of the individuals who every 17 seconds is diagnosed with diabetes.

The Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program offers support for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, gestational diabetes and individuals interested in or currently using insulin pump therapy. Appointments for managing diabetes are available through group classes and one-on-one individual appointments for both education or medical management.
