The Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) Foundation announced the establishment of the Greg Sellnow Memorial Journalism Scholarship, created in memory of longtime Rochester Post-Bulletin columnist and journalist Greg Sellnow, who passed away in March 2012. Sellnow was a graduate of Brainerd High School and Central Lakes College. He worked for several years as a photo and news reporter intern at the Brainerd Dispatch.
Created by the Sellnow family and the Post-Bulletin Co., the scholarship memorializes Sellnow’s passion, enduring voice and professionalism. The scholarship supports future generations of print and online journalism students and their learning.
The scholarship will benefit an RCTC student pursuing a degree in print and online journalism who has completed the first year of college. Preference will be shown to full-time students; however, part-time candidates are encouraged to apply as well. Applicants will submit a 300-word essay on why journalism is my chosen profession. Sample writings need to be submitted with the application that may include a previous exam paper or feature story from a high school and/or the RCTC Echo newspaper.
Students must possess a minimum 2.5 GPA. Applicant’s community engagement, community service work, prior participation in school clubs or athletics, and employment will be considered. Recipients of the scholarship will benefit through an internship position at the Post-Bulletin, gaining applied knowledge of the newspaper business and receiving valuable mentorship experiences from experts in the field.
