Fill the Boot campaign brings in money
The Brainerd Fire Department announced Friday that it raised about $8,400 last week for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in the three-day Fill the Boot campaign.
Kurt Doree, chair of the Fill the Book campaign for the Brainerd firefighters, said that even though the department’s goal was to raise $12,000, he is pleased by the amount of money donated by the community, as each dollar counts. Doree said the money goes to help the MDA purchase equipment, such as crutches, wheelchairs and expensive equipment that families can rent for a minimal fee. It also provides a week camp for youth to attend, so they can go and have some fun.
Fire departments across the country will be collecting donations in their boots during the summer. This was Brainerd’s second year taking part in the annual Fill the Boot campaign. The International Association of Fire Fighters union from across the country select three days for the event to have citizens Fill the Boot with money. Proceeds that are collected go directly to MDA. This is the 58th annual Fill the Boot season and to date, more than $28 million has been raised nationally for MDA.
