Couple’s death ruled a murder-suicide in structure fire
The death of a Lake Edward Township couple — whose bodies were found April 30 in their residence during a structure fire — was ruled a murder-suicide, Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl said Tuesday.
Dahl said preliminary reports from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner relating to the deaths of Kenneth Alan Ponsness, 56, and Kathleen Marie Ponsness, 57, ruled Kathleen’s death as a homicide and Kenneth’s death as a suicide.
Dahl could not comment any further on the details of how the couple died and how the fire at their residence started.
“We are continuing to investigate the details relating to this incident and will not release any information until the final results from the medical examiner are in, which could take four to six weeks,” said Dahl.
“This is truly a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ponsness’ family.”
The Nisswa Fire Department was called to the structure fire about 10:36 a.m. at the one-story house, with a basement and the unattached garage. Both the house and the garage were fairly engulfed upon arrival.
The couple was found by firefighters in their residence at 1562 Tranquil Road, off Crow Wing County Road 4, just north of Crow Wing County Road 3 in Merrifield.
