ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Much of the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness burned in a wildfire last year will reopen Wednesday.
The 93,000-acre area was closed last year because of concerns over standing dead trees. Superior National Forest spokeswoman Kris Reichenbach says crews were able to check conditions in the area for the first time last week and think it's safe.
Forest managers are recommending visitors to the area pay special attention to dead trees in the recovering wilderness and stay on established paths.
Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/Iud8G8 ) says about 100 of the 177 campsites in the burned area have reopened. The Pagami Creek fire burned about145 square miles inside and outside the BWCA. The wilderness has more than 2,100 campsites scattered across 1,700 square miles of wilderness.
