Brainerd area soldiers returning home from deployment overseas will have the opportunity to rock ‘n’ roll this month thanks the generosity of the organizers of an arena 1980s rock cover band event in Brainerd.

Hairball, a Minneapolis band that covers Kiss, AC/DC, Poison and Motley Crue, will perform at the Brainerd Area Civic Center on April 27.

Organizers of the event, a fundraiser for the Brainerd Basketball Association, the Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association and the Brainerd Jaycees, will donate 30 tickets to area soldiers.

Wade Haapajoki of the Brainerd Basketball Association said the donation was meant to show appreciation to the military personnel. He said the band sold out in Sartell, with about 4,000 tickets being purchased.

“This is the least we can do for them,” he said.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the event. The opening act for Hairball is Tim Mahoney, who will perform at 7:15 p.m. Mahoney has appeared on NBC’s “The Voice.” Hairball will play from 9 until about 11 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased for $20 at Cash Wise Liquor in Brainerd and Baxter and at West Side Liquor in Baxter. Those attending must be 21 years old or older. All proceeds will go toward supporting Brainerd’s hockey and basketball programs.
