A special addition to Cultural Thursday’s presentations have been added to the April schedule at Central Lakes College in Brainerd to take advantage of a slide presentation on Suriname’s Amazon Delta by CLC sociologist Gary Payne.
Payne and Pine River teacher Mary Rosenberg — who traveled across the South American nation over 12 days in March — will present their travels in two presentations, at noon and at 7 p.m. April 19, in the Brainerd campus lecture hall (E354). Admission is free, the public is invited.
Payne said in an email release that, “Suriname’s history is one of the most unusual on the planet. It was called Dutch Guyana during centuries of slavery when large numbers of African slaves were brought over.
“But as the African slaves escaped and rebelled against the plantation owners, the Dutch brought in large numbers of indentured slaves from Pakistan, India, China and Indonesia.
“Most of the Dutch eventually gave up on slavery and left Suriname when these latter servant groups formed unions and bargained for better wages and working conditions.”
The descendants of these centuries of slavery now operate their own nation in clever ways that have allowed the different groups to unite, celebrating each other’s cultural traditions and holidays.
“The presence of temples, synagogues, mosques and churches on the same city block and sharing the same night watchman demonstrates how far ahead Suriname is regarding human relations,” said Payne.

He does have some interesting views for sure
That being said with the amount of education he has had, he would benifit from learning more about things he is talking about before lecturing his class on the evil U.S. government when i was in his class he blamed wepons sales in oppressed countries on the U.S. government, when the wepons in the pictures he took and showed in class were clearly russian and chinese in origin, now i am no saying the U.S. doesent sell wepons abroad because it does happen frequently, but i am saying he isent as well rounded as he thinks he is, and frankly he is the perfect example of what is wrong with college today, there are too many teachers like him pushing their own political agenda on the young students who are trying to find their place in the world, he needs to teach without bringing his politics into it, and i direct this to both the left and the right because indoctrination comes from both sides, but curiously the left has locked up most of the teaching positions from preschool on and yes dr payne is a bit of a loon and he freely admits it, i find him a decent man although i dont agree with his beliefs on many things.
Too bad they won't
tell the truth. Most of the African slaves were sold by their relatives. I sincerely hope that no school district funds are paying for this political presentation.
FnB, that is where it started
Along with the people selling themselves fore a boat ride here, the majority of the slaves shipped were bought from rival tribes who wanted more teritory, people always look at the down side of slavery in this country, they seem to forget that in the beginning indentured servitude and slavery were the same thing, people, both white and black worked a set term and then were released from service, and for the most part were treated well, it was the southern plantation owners that changed things and turned people into slaves and classified them as property, the interesting thing that people forget is that the republican party freed the slaves where the democratic party fought to keep slavery.
"frankly he is the perfect
"frankly he is the perfect example of what is wrong with college today, there are too many teachers like him pushing their own political agenda on the young students who are trying to find their place in the world, he needs to teach without bringing his politics into it" Really? You think Mr. Payne is the problem with college today?
"he would benifit from learning more about things he is talking about before lecturing his class on the evil U.S. government" t really doesn't take a genius to figure out the government is corrupt. Most poor kids don't make it to college to learn about the evil U.S. government they figured that out on there own and since you haven't figured that out yet it is easy to see where you came from.
The
republican party freed the slaves where the democratic party fought to keep slavery.
Just as they do yet today.
