Shock and excitement continues for Brainerd High School teacher Dave Borash, who has been named to the top 10 finalist list for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
“When I got the phone call during third hour on Friday, my hands were shaking I was so excited,” said Borash who has taught economics and human geography classes at the high school since 2000. “To be honest, I never imagined I would make it this far, and that’s the part that gets me every time ... and now I am really enjoying it.”
Starting with 111 candidates vying for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year, the list was narrowed down to 34 across the state in March, and now it’s down to 10, including Borash, who was selected as the 2011 Brainerd Teacher of the Year winner in February 2011.
“It’s a huge honor it really is,” Borash said. “To be able to represent the teachers here as well as Minnesota, I take great pride in that and in what I do.
“My mom and dad are both retired teachers so to be honored doing what they did for many years also, is something extra special.”
Choosing the finalists was a selection panel of 22 community leaders, meeting in St. Paul. The Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced May 6 at a banquet in Brooklyn Park.
