CLC to host basic motorcycle riding course

CLC offers motorcycle rider courses through spring and summer

Central Lakes College in Brainerd scheduled a Basic Rider Course for motorcyclists April 19, 21, and 22.

Minnesota law requires motorcyclists under age 18 to pass an approved Rider Skills Training course. Students must complete 14.5 hours of integrated instruction — 4.5 hours in the classroom and 10 hours of practice on a training motorcycle, which is provided.

The Basic Rider Course offers the most complete motorcycle training available. The course is divided into two phases:

Level one concentrates on motorcycle familiarization, clutch control, throttle control, riding posture, and the four basic skills, which are straight-line riding, turning, shifting, and stopping.

Level two includes limited-space maneuvers, counter-steering, cornering, and swerving.

While no previous motorcycle riding experience is required, it can be beneficial. Students must be able to ride a bicycle and must possess a valid driver’s license or motor vehicle instruction permit.

It is recommended — and to your advantage, CLC reports — to have a permit when signing up for this class. Riders 18 and over may earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course — if possessing a permit.

Each student must furnish his or her own protective clothing and Department of Transportation-approved helmet, and 100 percent attendance is mandatory.

The fee is $160.

Dates and times for the first training opportunity in the parking lot across from the Brainerd campus are 5:30-10 p.m., April 19, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or 2-7 p.m., April 21 and 22.

Payment is required at the time of registration. Registration deadline is April 12.

More motorcycle courses are offered in Brainerd this summer and fall, including Introduction to Motorcycle May 16 and Experienced Rider May 26 or Aug. 19. Basic Rider will also be offered in Staples in July.
