Man pleads guilty in synthetic drug death

Posted: March 22, 2012 - 2:33pm

ANOKA, Minn. (AP) — A man who provided a synthetic drug that killed a 19-year-old Blaine man has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.

Twenty-two-year-old Timothy LaMere pleaded guilty Thursday in Anoka County. The Star Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/GMHvWR ) he'll receive nine years, nine months in prison when he's sentenced May 25.

LaMere was facing trial for bringing 2C-E to a party in Blaine last March. Court documents show Trevor Robinson died after taking the drug. Ten others also became sick.

LaMere said in court that he bought the synthetic drug online, but didn't know it was illegal.

The U.S. attorney's office had written a letter to Anoka County prosecutors, saying it might pursue charges, with stiffer penalties, if a deal wasn't reached. Defense attorney Brad Zunker says that letter factored into his client's plea.
