Man charged Thursday with second-degree murder for stabbing
WALKER — A 20-year-old Red Lake man was charged Thursday with second-degree murder for the stabbing death of a 22-year-old Walker man that occurred Wednesday in the Onigum area, reported Cass County attorney Christopher Strandlie.
Sheldon James Smith appeared before Cass County District Judge David Harrington who set unconditional bail at $750,000 or $500,000 with conditions. Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 2.
The criminal complaint alleges that Smith stabbed the victim during an encounter between two groups of individuals. Smith fled the scene with his companions. The victim died on the way to the hospital of apparent stab wounds to the chest.
Smith was apprehended without incident on Thursday morning.
Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reported that the sheriff’s department received the call at approximately 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim had been stabbed. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
Smith is being held in the Cass County Jail pending formal charges.
Burch said the incident remains under investigation with an autopsy pending.
Assisting the Cass County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation are the Leech Lake Tribal Police and the Walker Police Department.
