Bill would start Minn. wolf season on deer opener

This undated image provided by Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks shows a wolf in Montana. Hunters in Montana have shot about 160 wolves as the season comes to an end Wednesday, falling short of the state’s 220-animal quota. State wildlife commissioners are considering extending the season in the Bitterroot Valley near the Idaho border in response to complaints about declining elk numbers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota's first wolf hunting season would open at the same time as the state's main firearms deer season under a broad policy bill a Minnesota House committee will consider this week.

The main game and fish bill of the session will be sponsored by Rep. Tom Hackbarth. The Republican from Cedar said Monday it will be mostly similar to what the Department of Natural Resources has proposed. But he says his version would run the wolf season concurrently with the deer season, instead of later as the DNR proposed. And he says wolf hunting and trapping license fees would be $26, the same as a deer license, instead of the $50 the agency has recommended.

The House environment, energy and natural resources committee holds a hearing on the bill Thursday.

IT'S WHAT'S DINNER

Cook up your poodle and the taste should be about the same. The Chinese raise and eat a lot of dog meat. Wolves have ruined the deer hunting in most of northern MN. Open it up year round.
