ELK RIVER — Josh McKeag set a school record in the 100-yard butterfly and the Brainerd Warriors saw 10 individuals and all three relay teams advance to the finals of the Section 8-2A tournament following the preliminary rounds Friday.
The top eight finishers in each event advance to the finals 4 p.m. Saturday while places 9-16 will compete in the consolation bracket. Diving prelims begin at noon.
Fourteen Warriors qualified for the finals and 17 for the consolation round. Brainerd recorded 31 season-best swims.
McKeag finished second behind Mike Lenz of Maple Grove in the butterfly, but broke the school record with a time of 53.06. He added a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
Nick Goll was the sole swimmer with a win for the Warriors on opening day, topping the 500 free with a time of 5:00.91. He was also second in the 200 frees and swam on two of the qualifying relays.
Also advancing in two individual events were Justin Kuglin, fourth in the 100 free and 200 individual medley, and Sam Dellacecca, fourth in the 200 free and sixth in the 100 free.
Justin Kuglin moved on with a second-place finish in the 50 free.
Rounding out the Warrior individuals in the finals are Tyler Schneider, seventh in the 200 free; Andrew Solseth, fifth in the 500 free; Luke Jacobsen, seventh in the 100 backstroke; and Joe Wells and Trent Anderson, sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.
Maple Grove dominated all three relays. Brainerd was second in the 200 medley relay (Jacobsen, Wells, Chase Wickman and Warling) and second in the 400 free relay (Matt Majerle, Adam Warren, Goll and Solseth). The Warriors’ 200 free relay (Warren, Wickman, Goll and Dellacecca) was third behind Maple Grove and St. Michael/Albertville.
