It might be a sister with a heart defect; a father with a pacemaker; or a grandmother lost to a heart attack.
Most people know someone affected by heart disease — the No. 1 killer of Minnesotans. Fortunately, the American Heart Association is fighting the battle against these dangerous afflictions every day in Minnesota through research, advocacy, provider education and public awareness.
To raise funds for this fight, the American Heart Association has partnered with Brainerd Lakes Heart and Vascular Center at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center for the Go Red for Women Luncheon 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Lodge at Brainerd Lakes in Baxter. It aims to educate participants about their risk of heart disease and what they can do to decrease that risk. It also encourages everyone to spread the word throughout the community. And, it raises money for research, awareness, and education. In the past two years in Minnesota, for every dollar raised, the American Heart Association spent three dollars on research, education and awareness.
Essentia Health will offer free heart screenings as part of the healthcare informational booths beginning at 10:30 a.m. along with opportunity to bid on silent auction items donated by community businesses.
At 12 p.m., the luncheon begins Brainerd Lakes Heart and Vascular Center Cardiologist Michael Rich. This year’s featured keynote speaker is Elizabeth Hagen. She will talk about “Now is Your Time: The Steps to be Fearless and Extraordinary” and how women may make it their mission to lead healthier lives. Participants will also hear stories from a heart survivor — Bettie Miller, who will talk about her struggle with cardiovascular disease.
