MONTROSE, Minn. (AP) — A 7-year-old boy waiting for a school bus Friday morning was struck and killed by a car that ran a red light in the small town of Montrose and then crashed, the Minnesota State Patrol said. The driver also died.

The boy was waiting in front of his grandmother's house along Highway 12 in downtown Montrose when the crash happened about 8 a.m., patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske said. The grandmother did not see the accident and no other children were waiting for the bus, which arrived moments later, Roeske said.

"There's no other way to say it," Roeske told the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune. "This is an unspeakable tragedy."

The Ford Taurus LX was traveling west on the highway when it went up on the sidewalk, hit the boy and then hit a tree and rolled, the State Patrol said. Both the boy and the driver, a 47-year-old man who was wearing his seat belt, died at the scene.

The victims' names were not immediately released. An aunt told the Star Tribune that the boy attended school in Buffalo.

Roeske said authorities don't know if the driver had a medical condition. The Anoka County medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy.

Montrose is about 35 miles west of the Twin Cities.

The Minnesota State Patrol has identified the 7-year-old boy struck and killed by a car while waiting for a school bus in Montrose. Hayden Solien (soh-LEEN') of Montrose was waiting for the bus in front of his grandmother's house Friday morning when the car veered off Highway 21, struck the boy and then struck a tree and rolled. The driver also died. The patrol identifies him as 47-year-old Robert Mercier of Arlington. Mercier's wife, Suzann, tells the Star Tribune that her husband was driving home from Big Lake after working overnight for Metro Transit as a mechanic for the Northstar commuter rail line. She tells the newspaper he probably fell asleep. Authorities don't know if Mercier had a medical condition. An autopsy will be conducted.
