Arctic blast heading for Extravaganza

Posted: February 9, 2012 - 10:29pm

Weather outlook

Arctic air will move into Minnesota Friday morning bringing with it frigid temps, brisk wind and potentially dangerous wind chills, according to a special weather statement issued Thursday by the National Weather Service in Duluth.

The cold snap arrives just in time for the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Saturday on Gull Lake. However, the frigid conditions are expected to be brief, with temperatures returning to the mid to upper 20s by Sunday and the low to mid 30s by Tuesday.

Brainerd’s forecast from the weather service:

Friday — Partly cloudy with high temperatures of 4-9 degrees and north winds of 15-25 degrees below zero.

Friday night — Mostly clear with low temperatures of 7-12 degrees below zero, northwest winds 5-10 mph and wind chill values of 15-25 degrees below zero.

Saturday — Mostly sunny with high temperatures of 11-16 degrees, northwest winds of 10-15 mph and wind chill values of 20-30 degrees below zero.
