If you’ve driven down Washington Street through Northeast Brainerd lately chances are you’ve noticed the billboard for The Journey North — the one with the eyes.
The advertisement doesn’t say much but for many in the Brainerd community it says enough.
The billboard, on the south side of Washington Street just west of the Franklin Arts Center where The Journey North Church holds its weekly services, shows a pair of eyes with the words “Awaken Desire” and the schedule for The Journey North’s services.
Pastor Mark Bjorlo, lead pastor at The Journey North in Brainerd, said the billboard was never meant to be controversial, but to gain attention for his upcoming preaching series also called “Awaken Desire” — an eight week study on the Song of Solomon.
“I’m not looking for controversy, “Bjorlo said. “I’m not afraid of it either.”
Bjorlo said the billboard has created discussion within his church and among community members who happen to pass the sign while driving down Washington. Public response has ranged from curiosity to dismay resulting in phone calls, emails and dialogue on the church’s Facebook page. “A lot of people that I love have been offended ,” Bjorlo said. “That’s not what we wanted.”
Those who have questioned the content on the billboard have complained that the eyes look seductive or sexual.
One Vox Pop caller voiced to the Dispatch that the billboard was “demonic and a total misrepresentation of God’s law.”
Bjorlo sees things differently.
“It’s a pair of women’s eyes that look kind of empty to me,” he said. “They look genuinely sad.”
Bjorlo said he believes society has hijacked sexuality and impacted the way people view its purpose.
He aims to set the record straight on God’s design for sex in the context of marriage.
“We’re talking about the most sexual book in the world,” Bjorlo said. “And it’s God’s Book.”
Starting Sunday, Bjorlo will spend eight weeks worth of weekend services laying out the Biblical plan for love with the goal of equipping couples with Biblical perspective on the subject.
“Over and over the theme in (Song of Solomon) is not to arouse or awaken love until the right time,” Bjorlo said. “We want to communicate when is the right time and with whom is right one to awaken love.”
Bjorlo pointed out the text of the Song of Solomon reads like a play divided into acts and scenes — something that will tie into his introduction to the sermon series.
“We’re going to do something we’ve never done before,” he said. “We’re just going to read the text.”
Bjorlo said the public response to the upcoming series hasn’t changed his mind about the use of the billboard or the message it sends. “My job is to blow things up and put them back together better than they were,” he said.
Bjorlo has made the effort to respond to every personal inquiry about the billboard to help those concerned better understand its purpose.
Bob Gross, a Brainerd area business owner emailed Bjorlo with his concerns about the billboard stating, “The issue is that your newest sign has a woman with eyes, and it is dark, and it states ‘awaken desire.’ The same sign would be more effective if used for advertising a pornographic establishment. In fact if I didn’t know more about your church I might have thought that.”
Gross said he and Bjorlo had an ongoing dialogue about the message he felt the billboard conveyed and while Gross disagreed on the suggested meaning, he was in support of the idea it represented — as well as the use of the billboard for advertising services at the church.
“I think that advertising like this is super. I do it for my products and it is great for a church to do the same,” he said in an email to the Dispatch. Gross also said he believes the content of Song of Solomon is a message many need to hear. “In this we are both on the same team,” he said.
This isn’t the first time The Journey North billboard has created public criticism for the church. Last fall the sign showed a bald head with the words “40 days of love” tattooed across the back. “It made a lot of people uncomfortable,” Bjorlo said.
The Journey North has owned the billboard space for three years and are grateful for the advertising space it has given them since exterior signage is sparse outside of the Franklin Arts Center.
“It gives us a chance to communicate our upcoming series with the community,” Bjorlo said.
Bjorlo who came to faith later in life, said his perspective on his role as a church leader is to win as many people to Christ as he can.
“I want as many people to be found and not lost as possible,” he said. “I’m probably one of the more conservative pastors in the area, theologically, but methodologically I’m a little more free-wheeling.”
Pastor Brian Kimbler of Remnant Church in Brainerd, and a friend of Bjorlo said he recognizes The Journey North pastor’s mission in unconventional outreach.
“Mark is trying to reach a crowd that doesn’t normally go to church,” Kimbler said. “He pushes the envelope and, I’ll agree, this time he pushed it too far.”
Even though he sees some reason to the public response to The Journey North billboard, Kimbler said he knows Bjorlo well enough to know the intention of the billboard was well founded.
“The message he’s going to give when they do come into the church is a solid Biblical message,” he said. “I trust Mark on that.”
Bjorlo hopes the billboard, and the buzz it has created will encourage people to come check out the services at The Journey North and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. “It’s certainly not my intention to be offensive,” he said. “But to raise an eyebrow — absolutely.”
The Journey North weekend services are held in the main auditorium at the Franklin Arts Center on Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 8:30, 9:45 and 11:30 a.m.

I for one like the " controversial" billboard. It got people's attention and made some people think...
Well played Mark...well played!
Looking forward
Personally, I look forward to this series.
Sad
This is the emergent Church and their false Gospel. The Lord doesn't have to roll around in the filth of this world. These people preach a gospel that itching ears want to hear...
well played.
sex sells, even for your church.
Really?
This is "controversial"? Really? Some people need to get a life.
Seriously?
I wonder if the people who are calling to express their concern with this billboard have also called to express their concern with the nearly naked manequins in the display window of the "adult" store on Washington Street.
Obviously some people have way to much time on their hands.
But, hey, the Church has now gotten some free advertising, the Pastor was able to explain his program/series to a much larger audience and it didnt cost him a dime. Maybe it will increase the numbers of his congregation. Gotta love it when people get their panties in a bunch about something silly and their fuss helps out the other side.
Not Surprised
This pastor lives for this kind of stuff. The message and image was done on purpose.
ironic
In places like Saudi Arabia, the only acceptable body part on women to show in public are the eyes but in Brainerd this ad may be considered too sexy???
MARK and STAFF YOU DID A GREAT JOB!!!!
I was asked a couple of days ago what my thoughts were on the Billboard. Having my own opinion I have sat and read posts, read blogs, looked at the Billboard and attend church on Sunday mornings.(at the Journey North Community Church) I claim to be a Christian... and I feel I'm a Christian! I'm a Christian who's a Little Ruff around the edges, I'm not going to lie. I started attending the journey North Community Church not really knowing who Christ really was! I've been attending the church now for about seven years. In that seven years I've learned more about life, more about Christ and more about how to be like Christ then I have in my whole life! I think this billboard is great and wonderful! I look at my life the way it used to be... bouncing around relationship to relationship, and messing around. (SEX) I wasn't brought up in a Christian home, but did I have a conscience... yeah! Now I know more about that conscience. People are saying the sign is risky ...it's dark... dangerous.... the church is going to die because of billboards like this. Well... here's some food for thought. Knowing myself how I was seven years ago. That's how I felt...dark... scary ...scared and everything else in between! I didn't know my head from my tail! People are looking at this billboard and are being offended by it. I would be offended by it, if I was looking at it seven years ago.... but do you know why I would be offended by it??? Because Something was missing in my life...there was a place in my heart that was not filled... something was missing ... It speaks truth! People are lost in this town, in this community, in this world! If that billboard touches one persons life that's one more person that has depopulated hell! (Pastor Mark would say) maybe that truth is just eating in some people's hearts... Maybe now is a good time to start by setting foot into the Journey North or maybe some other church to learn about the truth. One Bible holds the truth to it all!
help, denton
the posts above are repeated.
Surprised but then again not
I was shocked but then again not. When you combine ego and sex, this is what you get, just what was desired. They made the paper and yes I say they because this represents that church. The saddest part is where they knowingly upset those they claim to love but continue anyway. Is it not possible you could be wrong, or is the attention just to wonderful. I don't know how Jesus would view the billboard but I do know what he says about faith, hope and love. Love trumps but not in this case. That is the part that doesn't surprise me, it breaks my heart.
The eyes
The eyes are the window to the soul. This model has very pretty eyes, I think.
I didn't take this as a seductive message at all. It made me think about going to church and absorbing the knowledge into my brain. Apparently, the regular advertising hook didn't work on me as intended. But then again, I don't walk around all day with my mind in the gutter.
Shock and awe
Great approach Pastor. Christ was great at shocking folks!
It got my attention. Only the distance (800 miles) keeps me from being there to hear what you have to say.
As your debating this hot topic give this some thought
"A missile under construction at an Iranian research-and-development facility, which was damaged by a mysterious explosion in November, was a long-range missile prototype with a range of 6,000 miles – enough to hit the United States."
This kind of puts this all important billboard topic in prospective!
Billboard Change
I have been very thankful for the feedback and the encouragement from so many of the leaders in our community like Bob Gross and Pastor Brian Kimbler as well as the many others.
While we are wildly excited about the launch of this series "Awaken Desire" it really isn't our heart at The Journey North to be offensive. And to those who found the billboard to be in poor taste we apologize for that. A new billboard has been ordered and should be up by the middle of February.
For those of you who have liked the billboard I want to say that I think you will like the messages even more.
I would like to clarify
I would like to clarify something for the record. Are you saying the Bob Gross and Paster Kimbler approve of the billboard with this message? Thank you for your efforts to remove the offensive billboard.
I have decided to attend
I have decided to attend Sunday. I will make sure that my wife wears her Burka made of the finest linen, and her black eye mesh to cover her eyes to appease the Brainerdians.
different strokes for different folks
Goal of a lot of attention achieved for this group.
I'll stick with my 'less flashy' congregation, no thanks.
No front page news on my church, but we do a lot of good things anyway.
Pastor Mark Bjorlo,
I commend you pastor Mark for sticking with the programming you have planned. and not backing down to the "DO GOODERS' Seriously some of these goody too shoes scare me more then the poster. I believe Pastor Mark was relaying a Message and I believe his message has been heard. Great Job Pastor Mark ,,,I have been toying with the idea of joining a church again but I did not want to go back to my traditional Lutheran one. Now with all this stuff going about I just might have to stop in and see one of your services.
Take Care Pastor Mark
don't let the neigh sayers get you down remember there is always on in every crowd holding the big wooden spoon and stirring the ------ Well you get my meaning.
Billboard
Well after I posted my last post I scrolled back and see they are going to change the poster. That is such a shame the bullies win again.!

turk31 - it is ironic. Thanks for the timely reminder.
OkeyDokey - you must be a woman.
LLR - spot on, as usual.
I talked with the pastor in question many years ago. In a moment of refreshing honesty, he admitted to me that most sermons today are nothing more than marketing tools. He is right at that point. Unfortunately, the billboard reinforces what many people are saying today about evangelicals today. We are essentially a shallow lot. We spend more resources on marketing our church than actually living out our faith.
Pastor Mark, Do NOT give in
Pastor Mark,
Do NOT give in to the old crows and remove the sign. I guess what we have to ask ourselves here, is, "Would Jesus back down?" My answer would be 'NO' he wouldn't.
Remember Some people act
Remember
Some people act like they've never waddled across the house to get a new roll of toilet paper with their pants around their ankles.
The fact that this pastor can
The fact that this pastor can say with a straight face that he thought those eyes looked "sad" is a joke. At first glance it looked more like a billboard for a strip joint. In spite of the progressive billboard, I have personally found myself not welcome there if I didn't live my life according to their rules.
I would still like an answer
I would still like an answer to this question. Did Bob Gross and Pastor Kimbler encourage you to leave this billboard up or agree with the content of it?
Well...
It's frightening to me that on TJN Facebook page, one of the church members commented on the billboard pic: "I like that we will do anything short of sin to reach people for Jesus!" Is that what you teach Pastor Mark? That's it's okay to toy with sin as long as it's done in the name of Jesus? That's some scary stuff right there. That's the message your members are proudly proclaiming on the FB page, you're going to be accountable for that in front of The Almighty, my brother..

If you looking for a response from Pastor Mark it might be best to contact him directly as he may not be reading through these comments. You can reach him through the Journey North's website at http://www.thejourneynorth.com/contact-us/.
The church's phone number is (218) 824-5617.
I spoke to both Bob Gross and Pastor Kimbler yesterday and neither said they "encouraged" the sign be left up. Both said they were in support of the content of the message series Pastor Mark will be starting this weekend.

I think that answers the
I think that answers the question, no one is opposed to the message series but Pastor Bjorlo said on here that he was thankful for the encouragement he has received and then named those two men. I thought it should be clear what they were encouraging, the billboard or the message, big difference and both highly respected men.

agree and frightening
more frightening than pretty eyes
Thank You Pastor Mark B.
Thank you for giving people like myself the opportunity to learn and worship our lord Jesus Christ. Without you having landed in Brainerd many years ago, I may have never found Christ in my life like it is today. Thank you for giving me the strength after coming to church for just a few short weeks to visit my dying father in the nursing home just weeks before he passed away. I was able to make things right with my father just before he died, I would not have done that if I wasn't attending TJN at that time! Your messages led my feet and my heart to his room at Cuyuna Regional, for that I will always be grateful Mark.
Personally, I don't think you could put anything offensive enough on a billboard in order for me to decide that you don't deliver the lords message from the Bible, or your heart, with more sincerity and authenticity.
Yea, the congregation tends to favor the Happy Gilmore crowd at times, which makes TJN all the easier to attend IMHO. I see no other church, NO other church, even remotely attempting to get us in the door and personally I wouldn't want to go. They want us to dress fancy, drive a Lincoln or a Cadillac, be very properly groomed, yada, yada, yada. To be in our 90's and maybe have a really good pension! This all the typical traditional hogwash that keeps most of generation X out of those establishments and frankly just makes it even easier to attend the Journey North, and maybe just forget the fact that other churches even exist.
I would like to add here for anyone reading this article and these comments, please, before you make any judgments do yourself a favor and stop by to just one of Mark's services. You will easily see in just one hour that this is the real deal, of all the pastor's I met no one preaches the word of God like Mark. The facilities may be nontraditional, but the message is ALWAYS refreshing. I have said it before and i will say it again here and now; Mark is the best pastor I have ever listened too in all my life and that includes television, radio, online, or at any church. To anyone that want's to judge his righteousness by a pair of eyes on a billboard sign, I pity you. You are missing out on something great and I truly pity you. For all the rest, see you Sunday at Franklin!
