It may take more than a big vase and a few throw pillows but two area people were interested in possibly providing interior decorating for the newly remodeled Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport.

The airport commission’s Public Relations/Marketing Committee is requesting proposals from firms or individuals to provide interior decorating at the terminal. The committee is asking for suggestions for type and location of art and for type and location of paint accents.

Showing interest in the project and the tour were Danae Blanck Anderson of I.D. Your World and Nathan Krueger, a Delta and Airmotives employee who is also a photographer.

The goal, according to Interim Airport Manager Rick Adair, is to “make it not look so sterile.” He asked the decorators to consider ways to improve the acoustics of a terminal that has hard walls and quite a bit of glass. Bob Cohrs of the Short Elliott Hendrickson engineering firm said decorative items could include sculptures, tapestries or plants. He suggested that they consider potential maintenance problems as they plan interior decoration.

“It would be nice to have some local touches,” Adair said.

Anderson and Krueger were asked to submit their proposals no later than 3 p.m. Jan. 26.

history is a great teacher

Fiddling while Rome burns or a "Let them eat cake" slap in the face to an overtaxed, under employed community?

Do you not read the comments after or do research about where this money is coming from for the airport? Why do people keep thinking it comes from a general fund? Why is it so hard to comprehend that all the money for the airport comes out of a specialist aviation fund that people who use the airline to travel pay into with part of the ticket? Why can't people realize that money for the airport comes from aviation funds? Do your research. This was part of the plans for the airport remodeling.

You keep forgetting to do you research. Every airline in every city is required to put in a percent of the ticket price into a specialized fund. This fund is used for airport improvements such as navigational aides, runway improvements, terminal improvements, and other improvements. Its not just one city paying for the improvements

An Opportunity to Sustain Local Artists

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport marketing committee followed the lead of the new Essentia Health Clinic in Baxter and helped sustain local artists with the purchase of their work? Dyan Westman, a fine art consultant at Dorsey-Hovde ArtDesign, did a fabulous job working with The Crossing Arts Alliance (TCAA), local artists, and Dr Dave Boran and the committee at Essentia Health to cultivate an inspiring environment that integrates the arts into the design process. After some artist members of TCAA toured the new airport space this summer, there was some discussion of creative solutions to help ease the acoustic concerns. Please contact TCAA at 218.833.0416 or visit our sales & gift gallery, if you'd like help connecting to Brainerd Lakes artists.

and then they could be poor people? You know they are professionals and need to actually pay for things, too. Like food and mortgages.

How about

if local artists are allowed to display their art for sale? Airport has free decoration and artists have a chance to sell their work. Win-Win??

the money isn't matched by the area. It is unknown how much comes from the local airport. Its just a small piece of the pie. Just let it be known that the decorating is part of the funding for the project. And no its not from your taxpaying dollar. if your going to gripe about wasted tax funds gripe about Bob Olson's pay when he doesn't do a dang thing.

Contradiction

Do you really expect to convince people of your stand when you state it is unknown how much comes from the local airport, yet still claim it is a small piece of the pie. You can't have it both ways. Deflecting the subject at hand will not work either. You can save your attacks on the local polititions for the other article. We are discussing the airport funding.

I use the airport all the

I use the airport all the time, and I hate the remodel. Cold and sterile. Some paintings and sculptures aren't going to warm it up. A complete waste of money, when all that was needed was a couple of jetways.

You are twisting my words to your own appeal. What i mean by a small piece of the pie is the money used to fund the airport grant is a small piece of pie taken from the overall aviation fund. I don't know about you but i would rather see that money spent in brainerd, helping hard working people earn money so they can put it back into our economy. If that money was used at a different airport that money would benefit that area's economy.

As far as the local airport is concerned with funding. If i new the exact amount of money in the aviation fund, with the exact amount of tax the airlines pay, with the exact amount of passengers on that board the delta flights between brainerd and minneapolis I bet i could figure out how much of a percentage came from brainerd. Get me those 3 figures and i could give a rough estimate...oh and by the way you can't just count current year. You would have to go back at least 10 years worth of contributions probably.
