Minn. redistricting panel hears GOP, DFL plans

Posted: January 4, 2012 - 6:53pm

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A lawyer for Democrats is accusing Minnesota Republicans of "gerrymandering" in order to lock in their gains from the 2010 election.

Minnesota's political parties argued for their plans to redraw the state's political boundaries before a special panel Wednesday.

Lawyer Eric Magnuson represents a plan supported by Republicans. The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/At6EuD ) reports Magnuson defended maps and plans based on those passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature but vetoed by Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton.

But Marc Elias, a lawyer representing the Democratic plan, says the courts should not, in effect, overturn Dayton's veto by agreeing to the Republican plan.

Redistricting happens once a decade to adjust congressional and legislative districts to reflect population changes.

The redistricting panel is expected to release its own plan by the end of February.
