Fierce winds kept the snow blowing across Big Portage Lake near Backus early Thursday morning, after law enforcement spent several hours there the previous night searching for possible ice fishermen in distress.

BACKUS — Emergency and dive team personnel spent nearly two hours Wednesday night searching Big Portage Lake near Backus for a possible drowning victim.

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch said at about 6 p.m., a report came in of someone who possibly might have gone into the water. Burch said personnel with the Lakes Area Dive Team, Backus First Responders and Backus Fire Rescue assisted the sheriff’s department with the search.

Burch said there were some young people out fishing who may have been loud and that could have triggered the call. Burch said all the people on the lake were accounted for.

“We want to encourage everyone to enjoy the lake this winter,” said Burch. “But please keep in mind that ice is never safe, and to use extreme caution this time of the year because there are poor ice conditions ... Better to be safe than sorry.”

Big Portage Lake

I can't believe this is the end of the story. People who live on the lake did'nt just hear kids being loud but crying wolf. They were yelling that someone went through the ice, help call 911 and ect. this is what triggered the 911 call. These men spent over 2 hours on the ice at dark in the fog searching risking their own lives,I can't believe this is the end of it. It had to of been alot of money for rescue teams, ambulance's cops firetrucks at the scene, for a kid this is funny lets pull a joke. I think these kids need to realize what they put these people through and the expense. Not only the rescurers but the people who heard them call out for help. OK one person heard these calls for help, no several heard them, so not just fishing but playing pranks and getting away with it.I would like to know the whole story, these kids after a major rescue has gone on tell the cops they were just fishing in the dark in the fog, come on what's up with that. Can't be end of story. Live near by, don't get this at all!

@underdog: Were you out on

@underdog: Were you out on the lake with them? Didn't think so. You have no idea what was going on out there. I would like to see your [filtered word] out in the middle of a lake when its as foggy as it was that night. You couldn't see anything. It wasn't "kids thinking its funny to pull a joke" or "playing pranks and getting away with it". [filtered word] happens. If you don't know all the facts stay out of it.
