Be a Santa to a Senior program running

Home Instead Senior Care is again sponsoring the Be a Santa to a Senior program in the Brainerd lakes area.

The program provides gifts and companionship to seniors who otherwise might not receive either this holiday season. Last year, the Brainerd program distributed 617 gifts to seniors and through the Home Instead Senior Care network, 1.5 million gifts were provided to more than 750,000 seniors throughout North America.

Before the holiday season, participating non-profit organizations identified seniors in need of companionship and a holiday gift and provided those names to the Home Instead Senior Care office. Christmas trees, went up in local businesses throughout the Brainerd lakes area and feature ornaments with the first names only of the seniors and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick up an ornament, buy items on the list and return them wrapped or unwrapped to the store, along with the ornament attached.

Deb Cranny, Brainerd Home Instead executive director, said there are no qualifications for seniors to be on the list. The gifts will be delivered to seniors on Dec. 19.
