The owner of Risky Business Friday was charged in Crow Wing County District Court with selling synthetic cannabinoids out of his Brainerd store.
Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston said Friday that Ronald William Beattie Jr. of Baxter, was arrested around 11 a.m. Thursday after officers conducted a controlled buy of the suspected illegal synthetic cannabinoids at the lingerie, novelty and video store located at 326 Washington St.
McQuiston said in a news release that officers were acting on information that Risky Business was again engaged in the sale of the drug. On Thursday the owner sold a product suspected of containing synthetic cannabinoids. After the buy was completed, Brainerd officers and investigators entered the store and placed Beattie under arrest for the sale of synthetic cannabinoids, which is a gross misdemeanor.
McQuiston said after obtaining the search warrant for Risky Business, police seized about 430 individual packages of variety of suspected synthetic cannabinoids labeled under names of “Down 2 Earth,” Mystic” and “Kush Max.” These products have an estimated sale value of more than $15,000.
This is the second incident involving Risky Business that the Brainerd Police Department has investigated. The first incident began when a new law went into effect July 1 in Minnesota that prohibits the possession and sale of synthetic cannabinoids. Brainerd police then advised Risky Business to stop selling the synthetic marijuana. In late July police received an anonymous tip that the business was still selling the illegal products and an undercover buy was conducted at the business. At this time, police seized an amount with an estimated value of more than $12,000.
After Beattie’s first court appearance, he was released with several conditions, including not using drugs or alcohol. His next hearing will be at 1:30 p.m. March 6.
Anyone with information regarding the sale or possession of synthetic drugs is asked to call the Brainerd Police Department at 829-2805.
