The Westgate Mall has new owners.
Negotiations for a mall sale have been ongoing for months, but the sale is reported to be a done deal.
Developers Diversified Realty Corp., which changed its name to DDR Corp., sold the mall and the Movies 10 Theater to Alex Schleider and Alan Retkinski, who formed Westgate Mall Realty Group.
The mall will be managed by Lexington Realty International, based in Lakewood, N.J.
Retkinski owns and is president of Lexington Realty, which handles the Watertown Mall in South Dakota. Schleider owns the Viking Plaza in Alexandria.
Dave Jackson, Westgate Mall manager, said Retkinski and Schleider joined together to purchase the Westgate Mall. While he didn’t want to go into more details, Jackson said future plans for the mall will be exciting. More details on what the new owners have planned for the mall’s future are expected Tuesday when the new owners are in Baxter to speak to officials.
Mann Theatres reported it has been in talks with the new ownership regarding plans for the theater.
Ohio-based DDR gave the mall a makeover in excess of $1.2 million in the summer of 2006. The mall, part of the community since 1985, is a 260,199-square-foot enclosed shopping center. The mall was expanded in 1998.
The mall, which is in both the Brainerd and Baxter city limits, has been seeking an additional anchor to Herberger’s since Steve and Barry’s closed its store in 2008.

Add commentNew Mall, same high prices?
I really do hope they can do something with the mall, because as it is, it sucks.
Some people see the glass as half full
others half-empty. The half-fullers are usually happy people, but even the half-emptiers sometimes find a reason to smile.
And then there are...
Not holding my breath
I looked up Watertown Mall in South Dakota and Viking Plaza and both of them are nothing more than what Westgate has now. I hope they will put better stores in there but our mall already goes along the identical line of what this company has. I guess I'll keep traveling to Crossroads. Thank God for independent retailers like Kohls and JC Penney.
And then there are...
morons like you who have to make a comment on everyone else's comment, kind of like a leech. It the version of "Only I am allowed to make a comment". I feel sorry for you ey, I really do.
Some people see the glass as half full....
An optimist sees a half a glass of water and says "It's half full"
A pessimist sees a half a glass of water and says "It's half empty"
I see a half a glass of water and say "Put a shot of Windsor in that"!!!
You know, PD
You know, PD, you might have noticed that I have never stooped to words like "moron". Of course, I have never had a post pulled for content (or lack thereof), substance (again,..) crude language, epithets, or ad hominems, either.
The BDD doesn't maintain statistics about post count, etc., but I would suggest yours is much higher than mine.
If you believe you know so much more about retail in a difficult market, perhaps you could get hold of some credit and start your own establishment. Until then, you have only proven yourself to have a rather narrow, inflexible viewpoint, influenced and informed by equally narrow POV's, that likely have short-term , selfish gain in mind over sound public policy or the long-term good of our society. But then, you'd probably define that society differently than I might, in a way that denies rights and value to people that are different than yourself.
Now we're back to someone who is joyless and unhappy.
