Airline service to Brainerd would be more frequent but less spacious if the lone bid for air service from Great Lakes Airlines is accepted.
Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Manager Steve Sievek said Tuesday the airport commission has until Nov. 28 to voice concerns with Great Lakes proposal — a bid he termed as disappointing.
Sievek said in comments after the meeting Great Lakes Airlines would replace the Delta Saab 340’s 34-passenger prop plane, which has a restroom and a flight attendant, with a 19-passenger Beech 1900 prop plane with a single row of seats on both sides of the aisle, no restroom and no flight attendant.
In addition the Great Lakes aircraft could not be hooked up to a jet bridge either in Brainerd or the Twin Cities. Sievek said the inability to connect with a jet bridge, which the Brainerd airport expects to acquire as part of its terminal renovation, makes its difficult to accommodate people with mobility issues. A jet bridge, Sievek said, has been seen as an important tool, particularly with the Brainerd area’s aging population.
Sievek noted that many athletes who attend hockey camps in the Brainerd area come with bulky equipment and the storage space for such equipment in the Beech aircraft is “virtually nil.”
Sievek said the Great Lakes Airlines bid met all of the federal requirements. The airport manager said the airport commission intends to ask the federal Department of Transportation to rebid the Brainerd proposal.
“Whether or not they will do that, I don’t know,” Sievek said.
Sievek said for some of Brainerd’s air passengers the smaller aircraft won’t make any difference while others may choose to fly out of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
On the up side, Sievek said Great Lakes Airlines would offer four trips out of Brainerd compared to the two flights a day now offered by Delta.
Unlike Delta, which offered its air service without using a federal subsidy, Great Lakes Airlines would be subsidized by the government for as long as those subsidies continue.
Sievek said he is working with Brainerd Lakes Chamber CEO Lisa Paxton, Reggie Clow of Clow Stamping, Brian Thuringer of Madden’s and representatives of Ascensus before responding to the Great Lakes Airlines proposal.
Sievek emphasized that the airport will continue to have airline service until a replacement for Delta is found and in place.
The commission supported efforts by Airmotive employee Mike Petersen to have Brainerd included in the American Barnstormers Tour on Aug. 12-14, which could draw between 2,000 and 4,000 people.
Petersen said Brainerd and St. Cloud are being considered for inclusion in the tour and a decision could be made this week. The event features bi-plane rides and barnstormers celebrating the golden age of aviation (1920-1940).
“I think this is a fabulous idea,” Nystrom said. “This couldn’t be better situated or scheduled.”
The commission also:
Scheduled a closed personnel committee meeting for this month for union negotiation strategy and manager performance evaluation.
Discussed how it would wait for the county board to take action regarding conflict of interest training.
Learned that the display aircraft which is being repainted is expected to be completed this week. The date of its return to Brainerd will be decided later.
Called for airport officials to craft requests for proposal for interior design of the remodeled airport terminal by next month’s meeting.
Decided to not sell advertising venues in the restrooms of the remodeled terminal. Chair Beth Pfingsten said the advertisements were tacky and Commissioner Brad Davis agreed. The ads generate about $200 a year in revenue.
Approved a five-year lease with the airport’s cafe. The manager reported work continues on a proposed Avionics lease.
The next meeting is 9:30 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Jinx Ferrari Room in the Historic Crow Wing County Courthouse.

Great---now the airport will have a million dollar jetway to no where. Wasn't this whole remodel project suppose to be "necessary" so that "handicapped people" had better access to boarding the planes. Now the jetway will be usless and the planes will be even smaller. What a waste of $$$$. By the way---"tacky" is not selling advertising space in the restrooms. "Tacky" is spending gobs of money on needless projects.
??
The airport best take what they get---they should see by the huge response from all the potential carriers there is a big draw at the Brainerd airport for the carriers------NOT! They best be happy with what they got and take it or shut the airport down. And yes what a waste of money--and to top it off what happened to all the people that were going to fly in here and the need for the bridge across the river??? Someone had their head up their backside on that thought as well--by the way-who was that idiot???
Failure of Oberstar
Again what a program- throw money at it- and the airport manager comments- he should take a walk- down the 7000 foot runway- and keep going- maybe the bus could use the terminal and the shuttle service also.
What's needed...
What's needed is a good accounting of the MONEY!
Total, TOTAL cost annually (ticket prices plus subsidies) divided by the number of passengers.
Why not disclose these numbers?!?!?!
Scary - Those numbers were
Scary - Those numbers were posted on here a while back.
really??
seems to me that not long ago there was another article about how they didnt want a local Mn carrier to service them because theyd rather have great lakes??? WOW who woulda thought this situation would never come up. Face it that airport wont be happy untill they get a mainline carrier flying in there but I really dont see them knocking and asking for an invitation.
Mr. Sievek's disappointment
Mr. Sievek's disappointment that airline service to BRD is being downgraded is understandable. However, it surely can't come as a surprise to him that Great Lakes was going to bid based on using the Beech 1900 aircraft it has in it's fleet. Persons with a rudimentary grasp of the regional airline business understand the reality of the situation; aircraft which once could serve BRD profitably are quickly being taken out of service due to their high cost of operation. No replacement aircraft are being manufactured or are on the drawing board. There is no evidence this trend will change anytime soon.
It also shouldn't come as a surprise when fares increase and boardings plunge over the next year. Most of the price sensitive leisure traffic that formerly used BRD will find not only lower, but substantially lower fares offered from MSP, DTH and FAR.
What did I miss?
I love the jet bridge to nowhere comment. Personally, 4 flights per month from Brainerd will end. In fact, because I can I'll probably leave the area. I thought I read that Delta doesn't qualify for the federal subsidy. Why is that?
Airport Manager
I am a Graduate from SCSU with a Major in Airport Management. 17 years ago I applied for the position as Airport Manager in Brainerd. I was never selected for an interview, no big deal I moved on to bigger and better things. I must comment on how the current Airport Manager (Steve Sievek) has performed, how and why he was selected as Manager - this reveals where blame should be placed. Steve did what he was hired to do. Steve successfully (porked) hundreds of millions in Federal, State, and local grants. That money built a beautiful airport. It was never the intention of Steve Sievek, the Crow Wing County Commissioners, Brainerd City Council, Airport Commission to develop the airport with the inclusion of private industry. Steve is not to blame for loss of Delta Airlines leaving Brainerd. Government grants are justified by the assumption of attracting private industry monies for long term development. It’s based on speculation not concrete commitments. My point is Airports should be privatized. The costs for scheduled air services alone are too great. Airports need to be managed by private industry. Private industry is the customer for airports. The current public sector model is get government money any way you can. You can't just spend unlimited Tax collections to build whatever you think private industry may desire without including them in the ownership or lease agreements. Great Lakes Aviation would not come to Brainerd with Air Service if the Tax Payers did not pay for their seats (more justified pork) there are alternatives to Government managed airports....
