Occupy Brainerd?

Demonstration planned Wednesday at Brainerd City Hall in support of Occupy Wall Street movement

Posted: October 10, 2011 - 10:24pm

A peaceful demonstration has been planned from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday at Brainerd City Hall in support of national protests that have grown out of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Terry Sluss, an organizer, said the demonstration is an effort to bring attention to the greed by the wealthiest Americans and the lack of jobs. It is one of many demonstrations being coordinated this week across the country.

“People are frustrated at the lack of any political movement supporting jobs and getting the economy back on track,” Sluss said. “It’s been months and months since we’ve been talking about this and not a doggone thing is going on. I’ve been watching CNN today and Republicans are planning to oppose any action on Obama’s Jobs Act. They’re just going to sit on it, I guess, and that frustrates people who are really hurting.”

Sluss said they’re not calling the demonstration “Occupy Brainerd” because it’s only being planned for 1-1/2 hours and organizers don’t have a city permit to stay overnight outside city hall.

The demonstration is co-sponsored by the AFL-CIO and being supported by the Central Lakes Senior Caucus, DFL; local trades and labor groups, and MoveOn.org.

Sluss said he and other organizers fully anticipate this to be a peaceful demonstration.

“Unlike what Rep. (Eric) Cantor (R-Va.) has called groups like this, we are not a mob,” said Sluss.

Where do you come up with

Where do you come up with "sponsored by George Soros"?

Is he paying for activist training classes like the Koch brothers did for the Tea Party?

Repeat after me

Are they going to play the mindless moronic repeat after me game like at all the other demonstrations? That's so inspiring and uplifting!

talk about greed

In our local economy, union public workers are the well compensated, fall into the top percent and drive up the local tax base. Union labor has to travel to out of town or out of state job cites because the cost to employ all union labor drives up construction costs as compared to non-union labor. Mr.Sluss only needs to be reminded why Potlatch closed in Brainerd. The highest production cost in the world for it's product.

When Mr Sluss

has a home project does he ask for bids from union and non-union contractors or do it on his own to save in costs?

Doing something. And unions.

Mindless? Maybe it is just as mindless to do nothing, letting present conditions prevail.

Unions? Remember, at every contract negotiations, the union AND management are there.

fish, you are uneducated, what you think MoveOn.org is?

MoveOn.org is a George Soros baby, hence George Soros production.

George Soros will not be happy til he makes several billion off the crash of the US dollar. Dont think so, how do you suppose he makes money?

Do your own research for once on it? Google Zimbabwe, England, George Soros and see what you come up with.

I would think that the Unions would have better ways to spend their money, like finding ways to get more jobs within the companies they are affiliated with. Opps I forgot, they are not for the people

So I guess the goal of this demonstration is to further divide people, eh?

Letting present conditions prevail

Present conditions are...the country is broke, the state is broke, cities are broke and schools are claiming they are near broke. What are the costs associated with running the country, states, cities and school districts? Is it high overhead caused by buildings, raw material, transportation or labor costs? Who enjoyed a paid holiday yesterday and who did not? Taking money from one source and applying to another will not fix the problem if the problem is not corrected.

Who Cares?

I would bet if this protest was not advertised here it wouldn't even be noticed. Most likely a bunch of people looking to extend their unemployment benefits or welfare on the taxpayers backs. they should try to remember where their "free money" comes from...

"Republicans are planning to

"Republicans are planning to oppose any action on Obama’s Jobs Act. They’re just going to sit on it,"

I thought I saw on the news that it was going to be voted on today, and that many Dems are also unhappy with this bill.

iPhone and Mac

I hope they are true to their convictions and get rid of the iPhones and Macs since Apple manufactures everything in China with cheap, unskilled, non-union labor. Being one of the largest capitalistic companies on the planet, it would be a good first step. Are they going to walk or fill their car up with foreign oil? Can you say 'hypocritical'?

Scheduling Conflict

Why is this scheduled during standard business hours? Makes me wonder. Sorry, I will be working late because the third temporary hire in 5 weeks did not show up. No jobs? Try showing up. I am beginning to believe what I used to think of as rude and innacurate statements similar to: get off your lazy arse and work for what you want!

Looks like the union folks won't have any trouble leaving work to attend.

Absolutely Fish! Are you going to pass that on to President Obama and Senator Reid or are you just going to go with "it's George Bush's and the Republicans fault"?

This is what unions are good for!

"Ford to pay workers $6,000 bonus in new contract"

The same people who whine about the middle class aren't even in the middle class. How many of you got a $6000 bonus this year? I haven't seen a raise in 4 years. So can someone justify why I should buy an American car?

lakelander, I have a question for you

You say you enjoy watching the GOP attempt to destroy each other...? Have you spent any time listening to your Democrats as they skewer the GOP on any topic?

You should. It's really not that amusing.

Go for it

if you want to be associated with a guy that used a NY police
car to relieve himself and a rapper showing up in all his gold
chains and $350 shirt than what is this all about?
Our "Occupy Wall Street" is led by a retired teacher who
probably makes more on retirement that some people do
working 40 hours a week. Remember, we were forced to
pay more taxes to pay retirement pay for teachers.
Is this greed? Or is it taking/getting what they think
should be theirs?
I wonder if the teacher's retirement fund has any stock holdings. Wow, what if all these protests lead to one of the
stocks in their fund losing money?
Also, we that work in the private sector depend on people
with more money to provide jobs. If there are no jobs, no money to pay retirement benefits to public workers.

Why not protest the waste of taxpayer's money?

Start your protest with Solyndra and then move to Franklin
Raines, and Jeffrey Immelt.
When you're done with these, we can add more names.
