Tony Sailer has shed the interim tag.
The Brainerd Park Board this week appointed Sailer to the position of park director at a salary of $4,560 a month.
The Brainerd City Council will take action acknowledging Sailer’s appointment and salary at its meeting Monday.
The director position has been vacant since Aug. 30, 2010, when Wayne Mooney left for other employment. Sailer, who has been with the department for 12 years as a recreation specialist, was appointed as interim director following Mooney’s resignation.
“I’m excited about the whole prospect and I’ll try to keep ship sailing steady,” Sailer said Thursday. “The nice thing is I’ve been here 12 years, I know the people and the people know me so I think it’s going to be a smooth transition.”
Sailer said the park department maintenance crew and office staff were “top notch” and he thanked the park board for having confidence in him.
“I truly mean that,” Sailer said. “They could have gone outside, looked for an outsider, but I think in these economic times it helps that I’ve been involved with area clubs and community members. They know me and I know them and we do depend on those people not only for donations but for volunteering. It’s all for the benefit of the kids.”
In other action on Monday the park board decided against combining the parks maintenance department with the street department’s maintenance department.
The Brainerd City Council proposed the measure because it would save $10,000.
