Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission members received word last week they will receive $313,486 for the abandonment of Runway 1230.
The announcement was made Friday by the offices of Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn.
Airport Manager Steve Sievek said Friday the runway is being abandoned because of pavement age and safety concerns. He said the age of the pavement is such that the runway is not eligible for federal and state dollars and the entire price tag for improvements would have to be carried by the airport commission. Sievek also said that since the construction of Runway 1634 there has been a concern with conflicting approaches.

Add commentHuh? Does any of this make sense to any of you?
How in the world does "abandoning a runway" = $313k?
Where and what is the logic in this? Or is it just another stupid money giveaway that of course, isn't going to make sense?

The Airport will now hire a contractor to remove the old runway.
Actually, I believe they’ve already hired one and were waiting to secure the funding to pay the company before they begin the demolition.
Airports aren’t very inexpensive, are they.

Suggest The Airport Donate $ to Chip Cravaack
Maybe then Chip will convince his Tea Party Buddies in the US Congress to reevaluate rural air service to N MN ,before Delta pulls the plug on all the N MN airport service including Brainerd. Eliminating real legacy carrier air service to N MN is like turning the clock back 40 years....
Chip Cravaack,
unlike you, doesn't want to beat a dead horse. Your posting is nonsense.
Hire a Contractor ?
Such as Adair Excavating or a friend of a friend that happens to be in the business? There wouldn't be any conflict of interest involved in that ?

Check who announced it, you'll have your answer. The surprise is Mr. Ward was not included in the announcement touting more shovel ready, good paying jobs for the area.
I'm not doing anything
Maybe I should get a check for doing nothing!.......more stupid from the government, and our home grown pols are proud of it......brilliant.
Airport money
I lived across from the airport for ten years. Wondered how they were going to handle two runways. Glad to hear they are going to return the one to land and remove the asphalt. Not going back 49 years. if exes want to live here and commute they will find a jet for the other runway.
why?
why not just leave the old runway and save $313,000.00 ? only a stupid government could think of this for a airport with no carrier!
I agree, moonhawk
How about they just spray paint it green in the summer and white in the winter if they want it invisible.
So are we complaining about waste
So are we complaining about waste or misleading articles?
If the paper posted a piece explaining why it was neccesary, not just desired, and explaining where the money would come from, would that be different?
