ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced Pierz was awarded a $446,704 Safe Routes to School grant to construct 4,200 lineal feet of sidewalks and make safety improvements, including pavement markings, pedestrian refuge, and dynamic speed display system.
The grant was among $3.8 million in federal grants awarded statewide for 16 projects to improve the conditions and quality of bicycling and walking to school. Pierz was the only recipient in MnDOT’s District 3, which includes the Brainerd-Baxter area.
MnDOT announced the availability of the grants in May.
