Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers to build home in Brainerd starting July 11

Posted: June 27, 2011 - 10:12pm

Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers in the coming months to help build a home in Brainerd that will begin July 11. The build is being funded by a partnership between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

This partnership, called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, provides 55 percent of the construction costs for each home with local Thrivent chapters and Lutheran congregations raising an additional 10 percent.  Habitat for Humanity will cover the remaining 35 percent of construction costs.

The Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity program is a capacity building program in that it is helping Habitat for Humanity and more than 139 other affiliates increase the number of homes each will build this year. Volunteer crews who construct the homes alongside the partner families must be 25 percent members of Thrivent Financial, 50 percent members of area Lutheran churches, ensuring Lutheran engagement in the effort.

The public is invited to a site blessing at 8:30 a.m. July 11 at 1504 Pine St. Registration for half or full day shifts is currently underway. Open shifts for the first week of framing are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m., with 15-25 volunteers needed for each shift. Volunteers can sign up individually or as a group. Experience is not required for construction. Site hosts, safety control, construction and food volunteers are needed.

The build will take six to eight weeks. For more information or to volunteer, contact Laurie Ziebell at 828-8517 or laurie.ziebell@lakesareahabitat.org.

Build another

In this economy let the builders build. There are enough vacant and available homes as cheap as you can build one.
A group of my friends have been looking for a Brainerd house to use as an outfitter cabin and are closing in on 4 homes to look at on a weekend trip in the near future.
