BAXTER — Free skin cancer screenings are being offered from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 2 called Melanoma Monday at Dermatology Professionals in Baxter to coincide with Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology.
Current estimates are one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. One American dies from melanoma almost every hour. More than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma.
The Melanoma Monday screenings are part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer. More than one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
Melanoma Monday is strictly a screening for skin cancer and Dermatology Professionals report the exams will be quick. Gowns will not be provided, therefore, dressing in shorts or a bathing suit is recommended. If treatment is required, an additional appointment will need to be scheduled for another day.
