Lions Club collaboration keeps kids fed

In 2007, Kathy Novak of Deerwood Lakes Lions Club sent a Letter of Intent to Fund on behalf of three Lions Clubs to Sue Estee, Executive Director of Second Harvest North Central Food Bank to include the kids at CRES. Since originally funding the “Kids Packs to Go” at CRES in 2007 the need has grown from serving 50 kids to serving 120 kids at the end of the last school year. The Deerwood Lakes Lions, Bay Lake Area Lions and Cuyuna Range Lions Clubs joined by the Emily Outing (Lakers) Lions in 2010 and 2011 have collectively funded more than 2,700 Kids Packs for the summer program at the school fulfilling a need that Teppi had expressed for several years.

Lions Clubs are all about serving the needs of the community. As such needs arise, local Lions Clubs respond with funding, support through service, and encouragement.

This year the class will see the complete bread making process live, and all attendees are welcome to participate in the preparation.

Like any good sandwich, there will be something “in between.” In between making the bread and the raising and baking process, there will be other discussions and/or demonstrations for healthy bread toppings. Leaders are also hoping to explore the process for preparing gluten-free bread.

In order to give enough time for the baking process this class will begin at 3 p.m. which is an hour earlier than previous healthy cooking classes.

To register or for questions call Marlene at 829-0635, or email to mooveovermeat@paperplanit.com.

Oak Street Christian School is located at 2910 Oak Street, Building C, in Brainerd.
