Darby Nelson, aquatic ecologist, author and professor emeritus, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Northland Arboretum for the Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society meeting. Do you want to understand your lake better? Do you want to be a better lake steward and leave a healthy lake for your grandchildren? “For Love of Lakes” is one of four creative non-fiction books named as a finalist for the 24th Annual Minnesota Book Awards for 2012. Nelson will have books for sale before and after his presentation.

Corporation Committee of the Itasca Progressive Caucus
The Corporation Committee of the Itasca Progressive Caucus will give a presentation on the movement to amend the U.S. Constitution to abolish corporate personhood at 7 p.m. April 4 in the Brainerd Public Library’s large conference room. The presentation will discuss the corporate personhood doctrine, corporate influence over elections and government, the consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission decision, the Move to Amend’s proposed corporate personhood amendment, and how ratification of the proposed amendment would benefit democracy. There will be a question and answer session after the presentation.
Brainerd Area Coalition for Peace (BACP), the sponsor of the Move to Amend presentation, will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. in the Brainerd public library’s large conference room. The public is welcome to attend both events.
Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES
Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES will meet 7 p.m. Monday at the Masonic Hall. It will be come as you are night. Stone soup will be served at 6 p.m.
Book drive at Pillager School
PILLAGER — The Pillager Elementary Parent Teacher Organization is hosting a book drive through the end of March. New and gently used books for all grades are being accepted. Firearms safety class
The Brainerd VFW is sponsoring a firearms safety class from 6-8:30 p.m. April 12, 16, 19, 23, 25 and 30 with field day on April 28 at the Brainerd Public Library.
Students should be 12 years old by April 12. Cost is an online payment of $7.50 upon completion of the classes. Register by calling 829-6393 after 3 p.m. For questions, call Karen at 839-4748.
Ray’s Promenaders will host a square dance Friday at Franklin Arts Center. Jim Jirak will call Plus at 7:30 p.m. and Mainstream at 8 p.m. It’s hat night.
Military chili cook-off planned
The sixth annual military chili cook-off will begin at 11 a.m. Friday in the 3Wi parking lot in the Army tent. 3Wi is located across from Walgreens on Washington Street, Brainerd. Cost is $5 for all you can eat.
There will be a silent auction beginning Monday and ends 3 p.m. Friday.
