CROSBY — Orders are now being taken for pasties available for pickup starting the first Wednesday in October and extending through all Wednesdays in October at St. Joseph’s Church in Crosby, 619 Poplar St.
Sale dates are Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The annual pasty marathon is sponsored by St. Joseph’s CCW, Crosby. Those interested in placing orders for pasties may do so by calling Kay at 218-545-2306. If necessary, leave a message.
The pasties sell for $5 each and are made following a recipe for the pastry-enfolded meat and vegetable treat that dates back to the days when iron miners on the Cuyuna Range and tin miners in England took them to work in the mines. Each pasty is large enough to serve as a full meal for one or two people.
Orders are filled to be picked up on the Wednesday they are baked. Pick the Wednesday you would like your order and don’t forget to order extra to freeze for later meals.
■ Our Savior’s Lutheran Church rummage sale
PEQUOT LAKES — Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is hosting a rummage sale from 2-6 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4. Proceeds will go to help a needy family in Pequot Lakes and to ELCA World Hunger. Baked items will also be for sale.

■ 16th annual St. Francis Catholic School foundation dinner planned
BAXTER — The 16th Annual St. Francis Catholic School Foundation Dinner is set for Oct. 11 at Arrowwood Lodge in Baxter. Keynote speakers for the event are Father Brandon Moravitz who is with Brainerd Lakes Catholic Churches and Father Ryan Moravitz who is with Immaculate Heart Church in Crosslake. Father Brandon and Father Ryan are brothers and grew up in Ely.

■ ‘Dirty Oil’
The Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hold a discussion on the film “Dirty Oil” on from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Hearth Room, Arbor Glen, 14177 Broadmoor, Baxter. This meeting follows a viewing of the film on Sept. 14, which showed the effects of tar sand mining in Alberta, Canada, on the health of the people of the region and the resulting irreversible environmental damage and degradation of the planet. This area is the main source of oil used in the United States and shows no signs of slowing in demand. The questions arise: how does this affect us and what can we do about it? A potluck lunch will follow.

This Sunday Trinity Lutheran Church of Brainerd will present Bibles to all third graders in the Sunday school at both services. There will be two services on Sunday with Holy Communion at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Pastor David P. Holte will deliver the sermon.
The Education Hour and Coffee Hour will be held between the services. Also, Pastor Holte will be conducting a presentation and demonstration on the completion of the Johnson pipe organ with the addition of several new features.

LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls invite the public to attend a traditional Franciscan ritual of Transitus, which will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. This service will recall the events surrounding the death of St. Francis of Assisi and the farewell message he gave to his followers. at Bethany Lutheran
CUSHING — Members of Bethany Lutheran Church of Cushing will be serving its annual chicken supper Oct. 5 with serving times from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church located on Morrison County Road 11 just south of Highway 10 at Cushing.
The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 10 years of age and younger.
In the past, 50 percent of the profits go to the church and 50 percent has been donated locally and/or nationally (local food shelves, Habitat for Humanity and others).
Also part of the evening will be music by the Woodland Strings and items for sale at Grandma’s Pantry, including homemade or home grown items from the ladies of Women of Bethany. Pantry items will include home made craft items, home canned goods, baked goods, vegetables from the gardens and more. Proceeds from the Grandma’s Pantry sale are used by Women of Bethany to purchase supplies for quilt mission work, prayer shawl ministry and church kitchen needs.
■ Steak and wine dinner planned
PIERZ — There will be a steak and wine dinner Oct. 12 at the Brickyard Bar and Grill in Pierz to benefit the Holy Trinity Catholic School in Pierz. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. Complimentary wine will be served from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Dinner choice is steak or chicken. Cost: $25 per person. There will be a training session for My Hope for America 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lakewood Evangelical Free Church, 6284 Fairview Drive, Baxter. Evangelist Justin Hoover will conduct the training to be a “Matthew” where Christians invite friends, neighbors and relatives into their homes for fellowship, hearing testimonies and to watch Billy Graham give the Gospel over the national networks.
