■ Lenten retreat planned
The Brainerd Deanery Council of Catholic Women will have a Lenten retreat March 7 at St. Emily Catholic Church. If you come to Emily on County 1, take a right half block, then turn left to the church. Registration will be 8:30-9:30 a.m. Karen DuBord will speak at 9:45 a.m. on “Conversion of Heart, A Daily Event.” There will be a 15-minute break before 11 a.m. Mass. Father Paul Fruth and Father Ryan will concelebrate Mass. Father Mike will come in time for confessions. Lunch will be noon for $10 each. ■ Lenten services at Trinity Lutheran
Lenten services are continuing at Trinity Lutheran Church of Brainerd 6 p.m. Wednesday. Intern Katie Slack will be speaking on “Les Miserables” with an emphasis on the Lenten theme of sin and grace.
The 2013 Lenten services are focusing on the themes of recent movie releases as they relate to Lenten themes.

Truth Lutheran Church weekly Lenten services are Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. The Lenten season is a time for folks to intentionally focus on repentance and spiritual renewal. Truth Lutheran Church meets at the Brainerd Hotel, located on South Sixth Street in Brainerd.
■ Bethlehem Lutheran Church Lenten services
Lent continues at Bethlehem Lutheran Church this Sunday with normal worship times of 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday School and adult learning Hour at 9:40 a.m.

■ Recovery service
A service of Recovery and Great Thanksgiving will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. This service will be held on the third Wednesday of each month.
■ UCC adult forum
Indonesia will be the topic for the next two Sundays at First Congregational United Church of Christ’s Adult Forum. Guest speakers are Elsa Sasmita and Beatha Astamarindraputri. Both are students attending Central Lakes College with the Community College International Development Scholarship (CCID) program. Before arriving in the U.S., Elsa from Bogor worked as a course consultant for English First, selling the English course program and aiding teachers. Beatha, born in Jakarta, was selling real estate in Bali. They both left their jobs to study business management and administration at CLC. Good Shepherd Lenten service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church. The Lenten services will be focusing on the seven last words of Christ with Wednesday’s focus on “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43).

■ Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina
LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls invite the public to join them for Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading) from 6-7 p.m. Thursday in the Gathering Space at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. Centering Prayer is an ancient and contemporary way of prayer. In a small group, persons gather for 20-30 minutes to pray in quiet. Centering Prayer is experiencing a relationship with God as well as a discipline to foster that relationship. It is a movement beyond conversation with God to communion with God. That is followed by “Lectio Divina,” a reflection on the coming Sunday Scriptures. Come, the third Thursday of the month, gather with sisters and members of all faiths to ponder God’s presence in your life, and open yourself to receive the gift of a closer union with God. LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls invite the public to attend a special Lenten Day of Reflection entitled, “Ecological Conversion: A Franciscan Way of Life,” on March 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. Sister Gloria Haider, presenter and Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, will share significant stories of Saint Francis of Assisi, featuring key conversion accounts including all of creation. The Franciscan value of continual conversion will lead participants in how to respond to a world that longs for healing. In addition, through prayer and reflection, attendees will have the time and space to consider how Lent can be a time of healing and renewal. ■ Lenten services at Zion
Zion Lutheran Church, 220 North Eighth Street, Brainerd, will have Lenten services every Wednesday for six weeks from Wednesday to March 20. Noon services will be noon with a lunch following the service. Evening services will begin with a 5 p.m. supper followed by the worship service at 6:15 p.m.
The Brown Bag Bible Study Group has been changed from Wednesday to Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. to accommodate the Wednesday services.
On Feb. 24, there will be a required parent meeting for the youth attending the National Youth Gathering. Information will be shared for the upcoming trip and the financial requirements will be discussed.
The youth are also selling Herberger’s Community Days books for $5. Contact any of the kids to purchase one.
■ Community fish fry
Join us not only for a fundraiser but an annual tradition bringing our local community together each Friday during Lent Feb. 15 and 22 and March 1, 8, 15 and 22. The old-fashioned fish fry is served from 4:30-7 p.m. in the basement of St. Francis Church in Brainerd (located on the corners of Ninth and Juniper streets). Proceeds go to St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School. Cost: $9, adults; $5 children 12 and under.
■ First Lutheran Church Lenten services
This Lenten season, First Lutheran Church of Brainerd will again have Wednesday worship services at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the Holden evening prayer service. Each week of Lent, for the sermon portion of the service, we will be having a Lenten series of dramas. Each Wednesday evening you will experience a modern day courtroom scene with a judge, prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, and bailiff. The drama on Wednesday will be “A Cross Examination: John’s Witness – ‘Jesus Is Not a Fraud.’” There will also be a soup supper from 5:15-6:45 p.m.

Pastor Bob Twiton and Lay Minister Nancy Opitz will conduct mid-week Lenten services Wednesday beginning with soup and sandwiches at 6 p.m. “Facing Temptation,” the theme of the week, will acknowledge that we give into temptation at times but rest on the power of Christ to resist the devil. The church service begins at 7 p.m. Bethel is located at the intersection of Thompson Road and Five Mile Road.
