Breathing meditation and Lectio Divina

LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls invite the public to join them for Breathing Meditation (Centering Prayer) and Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading) from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 16 in the Gathering Space at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. Centering Prayer is an ancient and contemporary way of prayer. In a small group, persons gather for 20-30 minutes to pray in quiet, listening openness to God’s presence and action in one’s life. Centering Prayer is experiencing a relationship with God as well as a discipline to foster that relationship. It is a movement beyond conversation with God to communion with God. That is followed by “Lectio Divina,” a reflection on the coming Sunday Scriptures. Come, the third Thursday of the month, gather with sisters and members of all faiths to ponder God’s presence in your life, and open yourself to receive the gift of a closer union with God. No need to pre-register. For more information, call (320) 632-0668 or email franciscanlife@fslf.org.

FLC activities

First Lutheran Church, 424 South Eighth St., Brainerd, will host a “Foundations for BeFrienders Ministry” leadership training workshop. The workshop will be Oct. 8-11 at their facility in Brainerd. Hours for the workshop are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop will be conducted by BeFriender Ministry national staff.

BeFrienders Ministry began in the 1980s as an ecumenical education program at the College of St. Thomas. In 1982 it began offering educations for lay leaders. In 2006 it became an independent stand-alone 501C (3) organization.

BeFrienders Ministry is rooted in the baptismal call to ministry. Lay leaders embody the caring presences of God and the faith community. Spiritual growth and ongoing learning for lay ministry also have been emphasized though out the programs history. After BeFrienders lay leaders are trained at this workshop they will return to their faith communities or organizations and provide training and support to lay volunteers. These lay leaders will then become listening, caring presences to those who are facing a life changing experience. This maybe coping with chronic illness, cancer, dementia, depression, job loss, divorce, and bereavement — the list is endless.

If you are interested in attending or have any questions, call First Lutheran Church 829-9552 and speak with Pastor Kristin Oltman, the Rev. Dennis Paulson or call Karen Ruona parish nurse of First Lutheran at 828-4354 or contact the BeFrienders office at (952) 767-0244. You may access the website at www.befrienderministry.org. Registration must be completed by Sept. 9.

At both the 8 and 10 a.m. services Sunday at First Lutheran Church, the congregation will be inspired by the youth who recently attended the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. They will share inspiration from their journey. The FLC Men’s quartet will also share special music at both services.

A group of 9th-12th grade youth and adult faith advisers from First Lutheran Church in Brainerd will travel to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area from Aug. 9-12 to experience the nature, beauty and spirituality of the BWCA.
