Holy week services planned for the Brainerd lakes area
PEQUOT LAKES — Grace United Methodist Church of Pequot Lakes invites the community to the many services they will offer during Holy week. Sunday’s Palm Sunday service will be 9 a.m. with coffee fellowship to follow. For Maundy Thursday there will be a communion service beginning at 6 p.m. Service of Tenebrae will be held at 6 p.m. Good Friday. Holy week will end with two services being held Easter Sunday, April 24. A sunrise worship service will begin at 7 a.m. and traditional worship at 9 a.m.
Grace United Methodist Church is located 1.7 miles south of the stoplight in Pequot Lakes on Highway 371.
The Brainerd Laestadian Lutheran Church will host a special presentation and services this weekend. Guest speaker Hannu Janhunen, of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, will present. Beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, he will give a presentation on his recent mission trip to Ecuador followed by an evening devotion. Refreshments will be served afterward. Sunday morning will begin with a benefit breakfast at 8 a.m. and Palm Sunday services at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. There will be a noon lunch served for all the service guests. Holy week at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, ELCA, includes an 8 a.m. breakfast on Sunday with 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services with Holy Communion; a 6:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday worship service; a 6:30 p.m. worship service on Good Friday with a choir cantata, “A Service of Darkness,” commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus and representing the darkness that covered the earth as Jesus was crucified; and Easter Sunday, April 24 services will be 7, 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. with an 8 a.m. continental breakfast.

First Lutheran Church, 424 South Eighth St., Brainerd, will have Palm Sunday services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday and will include the Sunday school children carrying palms and the senior choir directed by Marcus Aulie sharing an Easter Cantata, “Who Do You Say That I Am? Man of Sorrows, King of Glory, Lord of Life!”
There will be no Wednesday services or evening activities at First Lutheran Church, Brainerd. Maundy Thursday services with Holy Communion will be 4:30 and 7 p.m. A special fellowship meal will be held between services in Koinonia. During the 7 p.m. service, 19 youths will receive First Communion.
Trinity Lutheran Church, 1420 South Sixth St., Brainerd, will have several services during Holy week and Easter Sunday.
The observance of Holy week will begin on Sunday with two services with the traditional Palm processional at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Pastor Intern Matt McWaters will be preaching.
On Wednesday there will be a special evening prayer service at 6 p.m. with Holy Communion.
The Maundy Thursday service with Holy Communion will begin 8 p.m. with Pastor Hans Anderson preaching. The Good Friday service will be the Tenebrae worship service at 8 p.m.
Easter Sunday worship will include three services beginning with the Sunrise contemporary worship at 6:30 a.m. followed by an Easter breakfast served in the fellowship hall by the high school youth mission group. The breakfast will continue until 10:30 a.m. The Easter Festival traditional worship services of worship will be held at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Pastor Hans Anderson will be preaching at all three services.

BAXTER — Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter will offer the following Holy week worship opportunities: Palm Sunday worship, 9 and 10:30 a.m. (Pancake breakfast after each service.); Tuesday service of healing, 7:30 p.m.; there will be no Wednesday worship this week; Maundy Thursday services will be noon and 7 p.m.; Good Friday services will be noon and 7 p.m.; Holy Saturday, Easter Vigil, noon – midnight; and Easter Sunday, sunrise service, 7 a.m. and festival worship, 9 and 10:30 a.m. An Easter continental breakfast will follow the first two services.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will have several services during Holy week and Easter Sunday.
There will be a divine service and Holy Communion at 9 a.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Thursday. Tenebrae Vespers with a choral cantata, “The Passion According to St. John,” will be 8 p.m. April 22. An Easter vigil service will be 8:30 p.m. April 23. Divine services with Holy Communion will be 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. April 24 with an Easter breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
Easter vacation Bible school
BAXTER — A one-day VBS, “Resurrection Run: Race to the Empty Tomb,” will be from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday hosted by Christ Lutheran Church in Baxter.
This event is for ages birth through fifth grade and will include Bible lessons, songs, snack and lunch, a craft and activities. Registration is free and can be done at the door or at christbaxter.com/vbs. Parents are welcome to stay or to drop off their children. Silent Walk for Peace planned
LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls invite the public to attend a Silent Walk for Peace at 9:30 a.m. on Good Friday, April 22. Join the sisters and associates for prayer and a silent walk for peace beginning in the west parking lot at St. Francis Center, Little Falls. Participants will take turns carrying a cross, which will lead the procession from one site to another in silence. Beginning with a prayer and song, participants will walk to various locations in Little Falls: Maple Island Park, Veteran’s Memorial, Bank Square, Morrison County Government Center, Jail, Mary of Lourdes School, Alverna Apartments/St. Otto’s Care Center and finally St. Gabriel’s Hospital. Following the cross all the way is a graphic reminder of some of the ways Jesus still suffers today and the necessity of praying for all people. Outdoor Stations of the Cross will follow at 11 a.m. (for those interested) on the east side of St. Francis Convent. First Lutheran Church, Brainerd, will have New Members Class No. 2 on Sunday during the Adult Enrichment hour in the Upper Room at 9:15 a.m. All new members joining the church on May 15 and their shepherds are encouraged to attend.
Community leadership team elected
LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, elected a community leadership team during their Delegate Assembly. This four-member team will serve the congregation of 164 sisters from June 2011 through June 2016.
Called forth and chosen by the community, the sisters elected Sister Beatrice Eichten as community minister and president and Sisters Rose Margaret Schneider, Carolita Mauer and Susan Knutson as assistant ministers.
Earth Day celebration

Spring concert planned
LITTLE FALLS — The St. Francis Community Chorale will present a spring concert at 7 p.m. April 29 in Sacred Heart Chapel at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. The chorale will present several numbers of varying styles. Also featured at this concert will be Sestri Na Mir, a women’s Slavic Choir, singing folk songs of eastern Europe. There will also be a men’s barbershop quartet and guest musicians.
Spaghetti supper planned
LITTLE FALLS — The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls will host a spaghetti supper from 4:30-7 p.m. April 30 at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. Spaghetti with meat sauce (meat-less sauce is available upon request). Ticket prices include adults, $7.50; children 5-12 years, $4; children under 5 years, free. Franciscan Girls’ Camp dates set
The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls are hosting a Franciscan Girls’ Camp entitled, “Faith and Fun with Franciscans,” 10 a.m. June 14 to 6 p.m. June 16 in Assisi Park, located on the grounds at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls. Girls who have completed grades 6-8 are invited to enjoy a variety of nature and fun activities, campfire, prayer and singing. Participants will have an opportunity to visit with and learn about the Franciscan Sisters and the values of St. Francis of Assisi. In addition, campers will discover their unique gifts and become aware of God’s presence in their lives-all while camping outdoors in the beauty of nature.

UCC adult forum
Jackie Froemming will present “Gardening Tips for Almost Every Letter” at First Congregational United Church of Christ’s adult forum on Sunday after the 10 a.m. worship. The presentation will cover gardening advice following almost all the letters of the alphabet starting with annuals, berries and composting and ending with vines, weeds and xeriscaping. Froemming is a county extension educator and the county coordinator for the Master Gardener Program.
Goldrush, a local bluegrass/gospel band is playing at the Crossroads Cafe (New Song Ministries) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The Crossroads Cafe is located on Laurel Street in Brainerd, across from Thrifty Drug.
