Super Bowl food at its best

Super Bowl Sunday is a big event for many, when friends and family gather to watch the big game on Sunday night. Some watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, some are into the game and for some, including me, it’s all about the food. My whole family enjoys football but who doesn’t enjoy good football flavors while cheering on your favorite team. I plan on getting my recipes done in advance so I can enjoy the evening when I get home from work.

■ Gooey Chicken Wings

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil

1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root*

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1-1/2 pounds chicken wings

In a 9- by-13-inch pan, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, oil, ginger and garlic powder. Mix until brown sugar is completely dissolved into the mixture. Place chicken wings in the dish and turn them over until they are well coated. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least four hours, turning the chicken after two hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake chicken wings covered for 45 minutes. Turn the wings and spoon sauce from the bottom of the pan over the top of the wings. Cook an additional 50 minutes, uncovered or until the wings are done. (*I keep the fresh ginger root in the freezer for recipes that call for it.)

■ Best Cottage Cheese Dip

(absolutely delicious)

12 ounces cottage cheese

1 cup Hellmann’s mayonnaise

2 teaspoons minced white onion

1 teaspoon minced garlic

Lawry’s Season Salt

1-2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1-2 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix all together, chill and serve with cut up veggies or is also delicious with potato chips.

■ Stuffed Cheese and Mushroom Appetizer Bread

1 round loaf sour dough bread or sweet Hawaiian bread

6 green onions, sliced

8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons butter

2 cups swiss cheese, shredded

Hollow out loaf of bread. Tear into bite size pieces and set aside. Lightly saute’ green onion and mushrooms in the butter until veggies are soft. Remove from heat and add mayonnaise and Swiss cheese. Blend well and put mixture in the hollowed out bread. Wrap loaf in foil and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

GARY’S TIP: A tablespoon of sugar added to water when cooking greens helps vegetables retain their fresh color.
