Jerry is not fully retired, but enjoys working less and having more time to do what he chooses. Keeping physically fit is one priority that he tries to stick to year around. It may not be a New Year’s resolution, but he keeps it on his mind. Jerry found that working part time, a regular exercise class was not something he could committee to, so working out independently is what works best for him.
Jerry has been a member of The Center for several years, but had not used the exercise equipment. He came in and was trained in on how to use the equipment safely and began a workout regiment that he sticks to twice if not three times a week. He enjoys the view while he is walking or jogging on the treadmill as the Cardio Room is located on the fourth floor and the windows face the west. Even if Jerry is going at his own speed, the view makes the miles on the treadmill go by faster! The workout circuit that Jerry does includes time on the recumbent bikes, row machine, weight bench, stretching, stair step machines and a Hoist machine. The Hoist is a workout machine that uses weights to challenge your limits as you progress in your workout. You can do a full workout on the Hoist alone. Jerry is an advocate of the stretching machines; as are many others who use them. The stretching machines seem to allow you to stretch out those kinks that you have had for years and forgotten what it felt like before they existed. It is the back muscles where it seems to make the most difference. What Jerry likes about The Center’s exercise equipment is that you can customizing your workout to what works for you; the workout rooms are open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.; using the equipment to work on the areas you feel you need to; increasing the number or repetitions or increasing the intensity of your workout.
There are other exercise options available for you at The Center as well. Bone Builders is a low impact exercise program that relies upon weight training to protect against fractures caused by osteoporosis. It increases muscular strength and bone density. Bone Builders is held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Great Room of The Center. Zumba Gold is a fun way to exercise. You do four basic dance steps to Latin music. This Zumba class is adapted to meet the tempo of individuals age 55 and up so don’t be afraid to come and join in! Class is held on Monday and Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. There is an instructor fee, but your first session is free!
If you are interested in an outdoors workout, we have snowshoes that you can check out for free. We will give you information on the trails at the Northland Arboretum or just use the woods at home. The snowshoes are easy to put on your boots and have poles that adjust for your height. Come in and check them out.
New Year’s resolutions come and go. Make a commitment to workout — whatever program fits you and your lifestyle. Make it worth it, come in, learn about our exercise programs and equipment and you’ll be glad you did. The Center is located at Eighth and Kingwood Streets in Brainerd.
