Artwork to be on display

Westgate Mall show to range from woodcarving to model railroading

Posted: June 13, 2011 - 3:50pm

The Lakes Area Senior Activity Center’s artists will be exhibiting their talents at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9,  at Westgate Mall in Brainerd. In the center of the mall you will find seniors providing instruction on wood carving and rosemaling. The center’s Model Rairoad Club also will be on hand to inform individuals on how they can get started making a scale model.

Dale and the wood carvers will be providing instruction, answering questions and displaying examples of their art. You will find beautiful examples of woodcarving from cartoonish characters, real life-like wildlife, to carved shapes that come out of boxes. Their passion for their hobby will amaze you; as will their talents,

The rosemalers are lead by Jan, but all have special talents that they have developed. Their projects vary from person to person, but the steadiness of hand and flow of the brush is astounding. You will able to try out brush strokes and get a sense of the combinations that it takes to complete a basic project.

Howard and the Model Railroad Club will be showing off one example of a model train . This group is new to the senior center, but they all have a desire to share their interest in designing model railroads and want to work with youths from the community on a model railroad project.

If you have an interest in wood carving, rosemaling or model railroads, please stop in and talk with the seniors who will be there demonstrating. Even if you are not interested in joining one of the groups, check out the examples that they will be displaying. You’ll find that age has nothing to do with a person’s ability. They are all artists with talents that they are willing to share.

These are three of the activities that are held at the senior center. There are many others. I encourage you to stop in for a tour and you will find the best treasure in the lakes area. The center is located at 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd. Call 829-9345 if you have a group that would like to check us out. Coffee is on and we are waiting.

DEANN BARRY is the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center director.
