A lost ball and green eggs

Thursday I was forced to play nine holes of golf for a segment the Brainerd Dispatch is putting together for the Brainerd Lakes Marketplace.
Eric Peterson, director of golf at Cragun’s Legacy Courses in East Gull Lake, was kind enough to accommodate me and Dispatch reporter/Sideline View co-producer Jessi Pierce for the afternoon. Mitch at the front desk was trusting enough to believe me when I told him this unbelievable scenario and ushered us off1 to the back nine of Dutch’s where we wouldn’t offend or disturb any of the important — read paying — clientele.

Lies We Tell Our Children

I know I did it to my kids…and now I’m watching my daughter do it to hers. Those little white lies that don’t really seem to harm anything. I suppose we could get into an ethical debate about whether lying is ever acceptable, but sometimes the things I would tell my kids would cause hours of endless amusement – at least for me. The lifelong damage I did to them is fair game for what my parents (and grand parents) did to me. Pay it forward, right?

Mosquito bites in March

If you're like me, the title of this blog post alone has you annoyed — and me straining not to itch. It's true, after a visit home to the Twin Cities I have developed the unthinkable, the unfathomable and most of all the unwelcome mosquito bites.

Now normally I am not one to complain. Living in Minnesota where the unofficial state bird is widely known to be the pesky little blood suckers I have realized that there is very little you can do about them and one way or another you'll eventually end up with itchy red bumps covering your legs but it's March!

Join us at the Brainerd Public Library on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30pm as Rick gives us insight to how “North Country Suite" depicts the landscape and the character of the people of northern Minnesota. Rick will describe the five movements in “North Country Suite”:

I. Spirit of the North
II. Northern Lights

Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music

What is it about some songs that just make you smile? The weather outside could be raining — or even worse snowing — and your tire could have just blown on your way to work where you are already running 10 minutes late and then out of the radio speakers comes a song that just makes it seem like it can be alright.

For three to five minutes it’s like there is a peaceful escape on a still very real level, with lyrics singing as though they were meant just for you on that exact moment — “Don’t worry, be happy.”

Review of "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy" at the Children's Theatre Company

A friendship blooms amidst the weedpatch of life in a coastal community in Maine in 1912. Turner Buckminster is new to town and doesn't quite fit in. He doesn't play baseball the right way. He wears too nice of clothes, and besides that, he's the preacher's son. Lizzie Bright Griffin is kept on the fringes because she's a colored girl from Malaga Island. The two meet while they're both trying to find some thinking space along the shores. Lizzie has rowed over from the island to dig for clams, and Turner has escaped the heat, from the sun and society.
