Review of The Brothers Size at the Guthrie by Mary Aalgaard

The best thing about watching plays at The Guthrie Theater Studio is that they offer something new. Not that all the plays are brand new. I saw "Julius Caesar" there last year, but done in a contemporary way. Other shows have been quite new from lesser known, still alive, playwrights, that have more diversity. "The Brothers Size" by Tarell Alvin McCraney is a modern play about brothers who live in a community in Louisianna where life is a struggle. People don't have much, and what they have, they've had to fight to keep. This includes relationships.

Drunken driving

Last year, Minnesotans faced dangers when they were on the road that had nothing to do with ice or snow or deer flying out of ditches.

Commenting Points System

We believe respectful and civil conversation is essential to a community, and we need your help to improve the quality of story commenting.

Our new user point system is part of that effort. You'll be awarded points for good commenting and for helping improve the commenting (voting, flagging spam, et cetera).

If you break the rules, you may lose points. If we have to block your account, you'll lose everything.

Some of this is automated, but it will take a few days to be fully configured, so don't be surprised if your point total says at zero for awhile.

My Anti-Bucket List

The Bucket List. These days everyone has one….or sung about one …or watched a movie about one. I don’t so much have a Bucket List as an Anti-Bucket List. There are the things I’ve decided I never ever have to do again – and you can’t make me.

These are the top 5 items on my Anti-Bucket List:

Review of Brighton Beach Memoirs at CLC by Mary Aalgaard

"Brighton Beach" memoirs, playing through July 28 at CLC theatre in Brainerd, is a play of historical merit and themes that connect with a modern day audience. This is my second viewing of a Neil Simon play in less than a week. Simon does know how to create a captivating script. His characters are real, humorous, and deal with issues that are relevant through the ages. Director Patrick Spradlin did an excellent job of casting this show. I thought that Caleb Christiansen, who plays the lead character Eugene, and Jen Anderson, who plays his mother Kate, were outstanding.

Would my wood work?

I understand the need to restrict the use of firewood in state parks but sometimes the rules and regulations make you scratch your head.
Last weekend we camped at Itasca State Park and had considered bringing some firewood from around Crow Wing County. After inquiring we learned that wood had to be purchased within 50 miles of the park. OK, it's worth it to keep invasive pests such as the emerald ash borer out of Itasca. When I buy the park ranger's wood, however, I looked at the label. It came from Crow Wing County.
