Wins and losses

Cam Newton was the winner of the Heisman Trophy, the Twins were not winners in the winter meetings/off-season and the Vikings, regardless of how they do against the Giants, are winners now that the ship has been righted.

Roster of Staff - Ack!

Check us out! The new look of the Brainerd Dispatch website has been
a long time in coming. Some of the staff is all over this new
Blog.  Ok, we had the blog feature before, but now, on the new
site, it's suddenly cool!

Oh, well, why not?

Whew, what a day.  I am writing this 75% done with baking about 20 dozen cookies.  That's right, 20 dozen.  I've got chocolate chip with peanut butter, english toffee, cranberry white chocolate and sugar (and I must say... they are all delicious!)  Of course, they aren't for me... the kids, mine included, will be decorating them this weekend for Sunday School.  Of course, when I say "decorate" I mean "eat."

Not-so-happy trails

I miss the Paul Bunyan Trail.

As soon as the ice melts - and sometimes before - in the spring until the snow flies, I enjoy the trail almost daily. I live a few blocks off the trail and enjoy jogs with the dog, biking and walking the trail.

I particularly enjoy the trail after the first snow. Unlike summers, when the trail is buzzing with activity, I often have my stretch of the trail north of Pequot Lakes to myself. The quiet beauty of the trail is amazing.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

I've never had a snowy Christmas.

I know for most Minnesotans that is not only shocking, but borders on horrifying. What can I say? I grew up in Northern California. My neighbors put Christmas lights in their palm trees.

I've lived in Minnesota for a grand total of 16 months and am heading into my second real winter. Ever.

Last winter I learned a few things about living in the snow, driving in the snow and walking in the snow. Some of my "lessons" were painful. Some were expensive. All remind me of my own smallness.

Not seeing is believing

There’s an old adage — when hitting against a flame-throwing pitcher in baseball — that goes something like “you can’t hit what you can’t see.”

The same goes for deer hunting, it seems, although the numbers this year would refute that.

In recent years, hunters have complained that they’re seeing fewer and fewer deer. As a result, there’s a lot less shooting — some say they didn’t take a shot all season. And in the end, there’s less venison in the freezer for those long, cold winters.

And that doesn’t sit well with hunters.

Christmas Lights -Christmas in Wadena

Photographers looking for a challenge should try their skill with GP Anderson's display at 414 3rd St. S.W. in Wadena. Anderson has added computer animation to the display synched with music. You can tune into the radio station with the songs and watch the lights.

The tough part is being in the right place at the right time. With certain songs you need to be ready with your camera at certain locations at the display.

Waste of time or true delight

There is a reason the word fan is in fanatic. And other than Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga fans, no group of people are more fanatical than sports fans.
Painted chests, rusted, 30-year old Winnebagos decked out in team colors and flags, the use of “we” when referring to the person’s favorite team are prime diagnosis for sports fanatics. More proof of the lunacy are the questions they ask themselves.

Changing political tides

Political shifts ebb and flow like ocean tides and in the Brainerd area there's no event where that's more apparent than the Brainerd Lakes Chamber's Eggs and Issues session that previews the upcoming legislative session.

The next Eggs and Issues is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday at the Lodge at Brainerd Lakes and after the shake-up from the 2010 election Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, will be the lone Democrat lawmaker at this session.

It if wasn't for Ward's gregarious manner we'd label him the Maytag repairman ... the loneliest guy in town.
