Ayiti se fò. Ayiti ap siviv.

Ten years ago this month I boarded a plane for an island country I knew little about and, frankly, had never really given much thought. I was 18, I didn't give a lot of thought to a lot of things.

A decade later, it's rare that a day goes by that I don't think about my time in Haiti.

When the tiny half-an-island nation was obliterated by the earthquake one year ago today, I found myself glued to my TV. Watching helplessly from the frozen north,  I worried for my friends. I was taken back to the winter of 2001 that I spent in Port-Au-Prince.

Words matter

News of the death of Brainerd's Patt Krantz, brought to mind a lesson she taught me — one every reporter should keep in mind.

Patt was an energetic woman, an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a tireless promoter of the Brainerd Lakes Chapter of Sweet Adelines. As city editor I often worked with her, arranging news photos that would help promote Sweet Adelines' concerts and fundraisers.

New baby storytime at the Brainerd Public Library

Even the littlest of Lakes area residents need some time of their own.  A baby storytime for those from birth to 24 months will be held every Thursday morning at 11:15 am starting February 17th.  Come to the Brainerd Public library with your little one for stories, music and songs.  Read with your baby everyday.  It's a great excuse to cuddle.

Contrast

We are blessed with a frozen landscape that has lasted over a week because  of the rain and later snow during the New Year's weekend.

One of my favorite subjects in winter is birch trees covered in snow. The problem is white birch bark against white snow will many times illustrate a blank scene for the viewer.

Remember to work with the snow and birch bark against a blue sky or a black background.

Using this technique, the viewer can experience what you saw in the field.

Freedom of speech

As a Brainerd Dispatch reporter, it’s not for us to state what’s right or what’s wrong with any issue. It’s our job to inform readers about an issue.

Three Questions to Help Kids Evaluate Media

I love the children's story Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola. Big Anthony steals Strega Nona's magic pasta pot and her spell to make pasta. Spaghetti fills the pot and spills out on the floor, but he doesn't know how to stop the pasta from growing. It flows through the house, out the door and down the street.

The abundance of media rushes over young people without them even realizing, and they can be swept along in the crush of messages like the spaghetti that flooded this fictional town.

Bert finally gets circled

Former Twin Bert Blyleven finally received word today that he has been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame after an undeserving wait. Bert compiled lights-out stats, which many of today's pitchers will never come close to matching — 287 wins, 60 shutouts, 242 complete games, 3,701 strikeouts. He only won 20 games once in a 22-year career, which is what many voters apparently held against him. His election was long overdue.

I bleed a lot....

I bleed a lot.  At least I try to.

There's always the urge, sometimes I can go months without, but I always come back to it.  As a matter of fact, at 5:15pm today, I'll be bleeding again.

Of course, I'm referring to giving blood.

I started giving blood in high school, the Red Cross used to hold a blood drive at our school, in the gym, and anyone who wanted to could stop by.

Lookout for "The Wave"

Book Review by Linda McIntosh

The Wave: in pursuit of the rogues, freaks and giants of the ocean

By Susan Casey

2010, Doubleday

This is not a usual area of interest for me, but Susan Casey has put together a fascinating look at the oceans of the world and the waves they produce.
