If it's Tuesday ... it must be Rotary

Rotary meetings are a fun blend of hometown boosterism, good-natured razzing inspiring civic involvement.

Thanks to an invitation from Brainerd Rotary Club member Deborah Erickson I was reminded of how much energy and good will is displayed at those weekly meetings.

Politicians play nice (for now)

Civility in government is the latest buzz phrase and if it causes politicians to actually curb some of their wilder, less than accurate statements, I'm all for it.

Many Republicans and Democrats have decided to cross the aisle and sit with members of the opposing  party during the president's State of the Union speech. That's a small gesture and one that seems like a no-brainer from the perspective of a small town journalist. It's not unusual for political rivals in Crow Wing County to see each other in church, at service club meetings or at the grocery store.

Flash Pop

Since the introduction of automatic flash fill on camera, photographers have been jumping for joy with the results. Well, sometimes not for joy but in anger.

While photographing the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing tourney on Gull Lake, I realized how important it was to use flash fill but with a modification.

Sports Question of the week

Let's hear some educated guesses as to which legendary NFL franchise wins Super Bowl XLV Feb. 6 in Arlington, Texas.

I'm not sure which direction I'm going yet. I like the Green Bay Packers' offense on the turf and Aaron Rodgers is playing the best at the quarterback position right now. But Big Ben does just enough to win and his two Super Bowl rings proves he can win in big games.

Both defenses are tremendous and similar since Dom Capers worked for both franchises.

Congrats Ron and Dave

Congrats to veteran Brainerd Warriors coaches Ron Stolski and Dave Maras for being nominated and/or receiving an award from their respective sports.

Family Movie Day

Going a bit stir crazy at your house?  Come to the Brainerd Public library Saturday February 5th for family movie day.  Starting at 1:00 pm we will show a movie in our large conference room.  Feels like a real movie theater with the movie on the big screen.  And like always..you can't beat the libraries price...it's free!  Call the library for details or for movie information.  (218) 829-5574.

Cupcakes and Wars

You've heard the old adage: "Never go shopping when you're hungry."  I think we can safely expand on that: "Never go shopping after watching Cupcake Wars."

Trial and Error Fishing

I love to fish.

They're paying attention

"Who's the Unabomber? Who's Timothy McVeigh?"

As the news related to the shootings in Arizona unfolded this week, my children's curiosity multiplied their questions.

My son read a newspaper article about Jared Loughner's court appearance with his attorney, who defended Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski. Later, he asked for context.

The relevant discussion that followed showed me that young people pay attention to current events and want help digesting the references and implications surrounding that event.
