Gordo's going, going, GONE

John Gordon reportedly will broadcast his final season of Twins baseball in 2011. Thank goodness. I've never been a favorite of Gordo, who continuously overstates the obvious (It's 3 and 2, 3 balls and 2 strikes) and his "Touch em all" home run schtick. Just call the game, cut the crap. A couple of my favorite Gordo guffaws: "And he slides into second base with a standup double" ... "It's a high drive to right .. and it's caught at second base by Hudson" AND "There's a long drive to center ... and it's foul" AND lastly "And the first pitch is a ball outside.

Archibald verbally commits to UNO

Brainerd's Josh Archibald has verbally committed to play hockey for the University of Nebraska-Omaha next season. Archibald is simply one of the best ever to play for Brainerd. He has a howitzer for a shot, can outskate virtually any opponent and is a physical player. Entering Tuesday's game against St. Cloud Apollo he ranks fourth in Warrior career scoring with 129 points. His 55 points this season are only 11 behind the single-season program record of 66 points by Jerr Johnson.

If Josh isn't playing in the NHL someday I'm going to be shocked.

Crouching tiger, hidden hot sauce

The other day I was so frustrated with my toddler - she had torn apart our living room and was starting to throw Candyland cards around the room despite my repeated warnings - that I said something that even surprised myself:

"Maddy, do you want a spanking??"

That was all it took. She stopped immediately, quickly jumped to her feet, dropping the rest of the cards, and said, "Yes!"

Whatever a spanking was — she has not been and won't ever be spanked — she was so excited to get one. It made me laugh and we picked up the cards together.

Gazelka tabbed as a 'Freshman to watch'

Sen. Paul Gazelka of rural Brainerd started off February with some favorable ink from the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

The insurance agency owner, who successfully challenged the incumbent Republican District 12 senator and then defeated an aggressive Democratic newcomer, was included in a list of "Five freshman to watch" in Feb. 1 story written by Eric Roper.

Searching for a Myth: Erin Hart's False Mermaid

A review of False Mermaid by Erin Hart (2010)

by Laurel Hall

In False Mermaid, Minnesota native Erin Hart takes the Irish myth of the selkie (a seal that can shed its skin to become a human, and put it back on to return to the sea) and spins a web of characters around it. Each story thread hints at the legend, though Hart never resorts to creating a trite metaphor.

Caribbean Cruises and Ice Fishing Extravaganzas

Last week I went on my very first cruise.  About six weeks earlier one of my friends had spotted an unbelievably good deal on a five night Royal Caribbean Cruise with stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel.  At only $275 a ticket – it was too good to pass up.  So, after a mad scramble to get my passport and time off at work, I left on my trip.

Time flies WAY too fast...

"Time flies WAY to fast. Charlie is 1 and learning so much by the day and Jaden will be 3 in just a few short months. It's starting to get fun to watch them play and interact together, but time needs to slow down."

You know you're in northern Minnesota ...

You know you're in northern Minnesota when a fish house on a trailer is parked in your employee lot for two days ... and no one thinks it's unusual.

Another sure sign is when you read that the third place prize for Back to Hack raffle in Hackensack is 10 yards of classified gravel from Schrupp Excavating.
