Kelly vs the Mountain of Snow

Never fails – every year that I’ve worked at the Dispatch I suddenly have the urge in the middle of the winter to start tunneling through the snow mountain that sits directly between our building and the Wendy’s right across the street.

Sounds a bit like a superhero, doesn't it?  Anyone who was stuck raising kids in the 80's who were hooked on the He-Man series knows what I'm talking about.  The shows' creative team wasn't too creative. They would take a characters feature and add OR to the end.  Remember Skeletor, Fakor, Stinkor, Spikor, Panthor or Stridor? ....but I digress. I'm here to talk about your friendly professional who sells houses.

Good-bye Cruiser, hello mini van!

I did it. I took the plunge.

I got a mini van.

No, I'm not a soccer mom; my daughter is only eight months old and nowhere near ready for cleats.

But we, as a family, were ready for more room, and the ease of getting the baby in and out of our vehicle.

With my PT Cruiser (which I loved and owned three of), it was not conducive to having a baby. Because my daughter's car seat sat in the middle of the back seat, I would literally have to get in my back seat and sit down in order to get her loaded and unloaded. What a hassle! And bad on the back!

Shot in the Dark

Recently I was assigned to photograph the girls basketball clash between Esko and Pequot Lakes. A point of interest of that night was that Pequot Lakes Patriot Emily Lueck was poised to surpass her 2000 point in her high school basketball career. It was unknown if the game would be stopped when Lueck passed the mark or not. As it turned out the game was not stopped when Lueck hit the basket breaking the 2000 point mark. Many parents struggle with capturing their children on the field, court or pool during sporting events.

Remembering Daytona

The problem with big moments is that, at the time, we seldom realize the magnitude of these events. And even when we do, we rarely make the time to bask in their grandeur.

The 1999 Daytona 500 was such an event for me.

It only Geotz better.

When Abby Geotz contacted me a few weeks ago to nominate her mom for an Everyday People feature, I had no idea how big of a story I was getting. **

Like, we're talking history channel biography mini-series type story.

Brainerd Library Book Club - Wed, March 9th @2pm

Come join us in the small meeting room at the Brainerd Public Library Wednesday, March 9th 2:00pm for a discussion of A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. This incredible book is a gothic novel set in rural Wisconsin in the winter. I didn't like the book at first however, I absolutely could not put it down until it was done. The characters were very believable and you just could not wait to see what was going to happen next. The imagery of the freezing stark environment adds another dimension to the story.

February 26th Family Movie Cancelled

Maybe it's just me?

In my last post, I recalled my misfortune from Ice Fishing, for better or for worse, it helped me recall this other little gem....

Perhaps I'm just unlucky, or perhaps (much more likely) someone is sabotaging my efforts to enjoy the great outdoors!

It's another fishing story, fortuntately this episode didn't take place in the sub zero temperatures of a Minnesota winter, but on a beautiful summer's day... (in a fairly nostalgic tone) I recall,
